First of all, I think that critics who say the movie is too long (or the book too short) are quite right. Especially when one only read The Hobbit, and not HoME, The Silmarillion and Lost Tales. Sometimes, we (fanboys and -girls or others visiting this and other forums regularly) we tend to forget that most people are not into ME that much. Can’t blame any on that, though.
That said, I suspect still a lot of material is not in the movie. Yet. Which makes room for another extended series. As much as I hope for it, I am not sure this will be a good thing for 80% of the cinema goers.
An other thing is the casting, compared to LotR. I think the casting is good for this movie. Of course, in backsight, there might be a lot to complain about the casting in LotR, but I didn’t then and to be honest, I wouldn’t do it now. It is just a different movie with a different story. We are lucky to have basically the same creative team who made it.
I agree with the critics on almost all of their complaints.
