"...his long white hair, his sweeping silver beard, and his broad shoulders, made him look like like some wise king of ancient legend. In his aged face under great snowy brows his dark eyes were set like coals that could leap suddenly into fire."
I hope this is not true, it really alters the plot drastically. There is no bigger fan of Thorin than my Sister and even she thinks he should not be kept alive, As much as I would hate to see Thorin to die, I think it is a large part of the book and he should fall in battle.

This would be simply horrible… Even after The Desolation of Smaug, I never thought PJ would make such a drastic change! I certainly hope this article is wrong.

I agree. I really think that they should stick to the book. It will not seem like the same story if they change such a big part as that. I understand that books and movies always have differences, but in my opinion, that is too big a part of the storyline to change.

Though there have been a few deviations and little additions to the original story, there hasn’t been anything like this (if it actually happens). One of the important things at the end of the story is the fact that Thorin Oakenshield actually does die. I hope that this is not true.

Thorin has to die, I’m sorry to say. I enjoyed him in the first two movies, but it is major in the book. It just has to happen.

Since they haven’t stuck to the book so far, why not throw something like that in? It’s not like the movies will ever be reconciled with those who love the books.
golly i hope not. i mean, i hate deaths and all, i really do, cry my eye balls out, but he’s got to know he’s going to disgust fans everywhere if Thorin and his nephews don’t die. I mean, I’ve been preparing myself for it this whole time, and there’s been so many illusions to it… this article has just gotta be wrong.

I agree. They never go by the book. Like how in Mirkwood, Bombur falls in the enchanted stream-never did do that. I also agree with legolas lover 15, that Thorin DOES have to die to make the book work the way it does. It HAS to happen.

I really hope this isn’t true. However, I was looking for news about the music in ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’, when I stumbled upon an interview with Thorin himself… well, Richard Armitage. Anyway, there are some clues showing that Thorin does come to the end of his journey in life in the movie. The interview (web address below) is quite long, so here is the quote:
”JOE: So there will be no prequels for Thorin or spin-offs for any of the other dwarves heading off for on other adventures when they get home again, no?
Richard: (Laughs) I would be very surprised. I don’t think Thorin’s going on any more adventures after the Battle Of The Five Armies. Maybe for a spiritual journey…”

Drat. I can’t say I didn’t see that coming though, as I did, back when the first movie came out.

Well… OneRing.net has already stated that it is false. So here’s the link to it. I can understand some additions or subtractions from the book but keeping someone alive that ends up dead at the end….that’s not okay.
If this happens I swear to God… There are few people who love Thorin as much as me, but if they keep him alive… It would ruin the entire trilogy. It would completely ruin the plot of the whole story and everything we know about Thorin as a character to keep him alive. I cannot see why you would want him to live- it would be worse than death for him to live and be corrupted further by the Arkenstone and fall prey to further dragon sickness. E was redeemed in death. I love Thorin so much, but I would rather see him die than have that happen to him. I don’t believer it is going to happen for this reason. The filmmakers know this. They won’t let him live. They can’t.

What idiot petitioned poor Mr. Jackson to make this change? If it were Kili or Fili, then people would maybe-kinda-sorta-not-really understand; this is definitely beyond pushing the limits. We’re walking on thin ice, here, which is definitely a bad idea when there’s a dragon around. I hope Smaug eats the bozo responsible for this.

This is blasphemy, if they do not stay true to Tolkien’s intent then the movie should not be called the hobbit.

I think that if this actually happens, I will die fantastically. Just as Thorin would have.
But at least he will die.
*grateful for that*
No. No! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Well, they already changed the story in many ways. I don’t see why people are getting so torn up now.
He better die!! As well as fili and kili.
