TA 2799. One of the great battles of the Third Age, and the conclusive battle of the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Also known as the Battle of Nanduhirion.
The battle was fought in the valley of Nanduhirion beneath Moria's gates. The Orcs were more numerous, and held the higher ground at the head of the valley. Thráin II, son of Thrór, led the Dwarves into a wave of attacks against the Orcs, led by Azog, but the Dwarves could not sway the ranks of the Orcs. Eventually reinforcements arrived in the shape of Dwarves from the Iron Hills, led by Náin III, son of Grór.
Náin III was killed by Azog, but his son Dáin II slew the Orc and cut off his head. After that, the remaining Orcs fled.
