Borondir was one of the six riders sent northwards from Gondor by the Steward Cirion to seek aid in war from the Northmen.

Their goal was to present the Seal of the Stewards to Eorl, the first of the Kings of the Mark.

He was the only one to make it from Gondor to Rohan alive, thus earning him the name "The Rider of the Last Hope".
