Buckland was a strip of wooded country, lying on the eastern banks of the Brandywine. It was nominally part of the Shire, settled in about TA 2340 by Gorhendad Oldbuck. The Bucklanders were nearly all Marish folk from the Eastfarthing.

Buckland was adminstered from Brandy Hall, the ancestral seat of the Brandybuck family. The head of the family was always known as the Master of Buckland.

Between Buckland and the Old Forest lay the High Hay, a hedge planted to protect Buckland from the malign influence of the Forest.
