In Hobbit History there were said to be three strains of Hobbits; the Fallohides, the Stoors and the Harfoots.

The Fallohides were the most learned in poetry and song as compared to the other strains, and these woodland folk were also taller than average Hobbits, and were fair-skinned. Fallohides were more daring and adventurous, and were known to take counsel with Elves, and often became leaders of their people.

The Shire itself was founded by the Fallohide brothers, Marcho and Blanco in the year 1601 of the Second Age.
