Finarfin was the youngest of Indis and Finwë's sons, and half-brother of Fëanor. He was said to have inherited his Vanyar mother's golden hair and her wise, gentle temperament. He married Eärwen, Olwë's daughter, and they had five children: Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor, and Galadriel.

Finarfin was the most peaceful of Finwë's children, and he often intervened in disagreements between his elder brothers. He also tried to calm Fëanor's gathering after the destruction of the Two Trees. He accompanied the exile of the Noldor part-way but turned back, to seek the pardon of the Valar. He afterwards ruled as King the remaining Noldor of Valinor. His children continued on to Middle-earth without him.

The Quenya form of Finarfin is Arafinwë meaning "Noble Finwë".
