After the murder of Finwë by Morgoth, Fëanor spoke passionately in the witness of the Noldor against the Valar. The Noldor were already aroused with fury against the Dark Lord who slew their king and stole the greatest creation of their folk, the Silmarils. They listened intently to Fëanor and took his words into their hearts.

Fëanor was grieved by his father's death, and so anguished by the rape of the Silmarils, that when the Noldor heard his impassioned words, they were stirred to madness.

Fëanor and his seven sons swore the Oath of Fëanor, to retrieve the stolen Silmarils at any cost, no matter who might stand in their path.

Some of Fëanor's kin spoke against his plans, or tried to calm the situation, but the fire within him burned too fiercely, and most were willing to follow the newly self-proclaimed King of the Noldor.

The host of the Noldor set out to return to Middle-earth, but on the road they were divided. Fëanor and his group arrived first at Alqualondë, and when the Teleri would not willingly allow the Noldor to take their ships to Middle-earth, the people of Fëanor began to take them by force.

When the other hosts of the Noldor came upon the fighting, some of them joined in, thinking that the Teleri were waging battle with the Noldor on behalf of the Valar, but it was not so. This slaying of Elf by Elf was the first Kinslaying, but sadly, it would not be the last.

At last the Teleri were overcome, and the Noldor were readying to board their newly won ships. At that time the Doom of the Noldor was pronounced by Mandos, in which the Noldor were banished from the Blessed Realm and were warned of the horrible atrocities that would befall them in Middle-earth.

Finarfin and some of his folk turned back and were forgiven and returned to the favor of the Valar, but most of the Noldor continued on and fled from Aman.

The Flight of the Noldor is sometimes also referred to as the Return of the Noldor because though to the Valar and their folk in the Blessed Realm, they were fleeing, to the Sindar and other Elves who had never come to the Blessed Realm, they were "returning" to be reunited with their sundered kin.
