A river of northern Rhovanion rising in the Grey Mountains and flowing south-east through the forest of Mirkwood and emptying into the Long Lake.

This river passed the halls of the Elvenking and was long used as the major trade and transportation route between the Wood-elves of Mirkwood and the Lake-town of Esgaroth at the mouth of the river. Goods were rowed upstream or poled on rafts. Empty barrels were floated down. In TA 2941, during the Quest of Erebor, Bilbo Baggins took advantage of this to effect his companions’ escape from the Elvenking’s dungeons.
