Fornost Erain was the chief stronghold of Arnor, and later the capital of Arthedain. It was also known as Kings Norbury.

The fortress survived until TA 1974, when the forces of the Witch-king of Angmar defeated Arvedui and took the stronghold.

In later days, the fortress was known as Deadmens Dike.
