While Thorin and Company were imprisoned in the Elvenking’s dungeons, Galion received a consignment of strong wine from Dorwinion for the king’s table. This wine was too strong for non-Sindarin elves and when Galion and the Guard Captain sampled it they quickly fell asleep.

This enabled Bilbo, made invisible by his magic ring, to take the guard’s keys and free the dwarves, concealing them in empty barrels for shipment back to Lake-town. When a group of Elves arrived to throw the barrels into the river, they woke Galion who instructed that the barrels be shipped, despite the fact that they seemed unusually heavy. Thus Bilbo and the dwarves escaped.
