In the First age Hathaldir the Young was one of the Outlaws of Dorthonion. A servant of Barahir, Lord of the men of Dorthonion, Hathaldir was one of the twelve companions that stayed and fought on with Barahir in the Dagor Bragollach or Battle of Sudden Flame.

After the rest of Barahir's people were destroyed or fled to other lands Hathaldir stayed with Barahir, along with eight other servants, Barahir's son Beren, and his nephews Beregund and Belegund.

For many years they hid in the south of Dorthonion, and were hunted like wild animals, until finally Melkor sent his chief servant, Sauron, to find and destroy them.

Through trickery Sauron captured one of the men, Gorlim, and then tricked him into giving away the position of the rest, by convincing him that he would be reunited with his wife, who, he did not realize, was already dead. After giving up the position of the others Gorlim was killed and Sauron's forces then surrounded and killed Hathaldir and all of the others, except for Barahir's son Beren who had been on a spying mission and was not in camp and escaped south.

Though Hathaldir and the rest of Barahir's companions died long ago, they were long remembered in the songs of the Noldor.
