East of the River Anduin, and on the border of Mordor, Ithilien was part of Gondor's land. The Crossroad divided it into North and South Ithilien.

When Minas Ithil was captured and re-named Minas Morgul in 2002 of the Third Age, Ithilien was deserted by the people of Gondor.

One refuge was left, and that used by the Rangers of Ithilien was Henneth Annûn, the 'Window of the West'. It was here that Frodo and Samwise found refuge for a night on their Quest for Mount Doom.

After the War of the Ring, Faramir, son of Denethor was made Prince of Ithilien by Aragorn, the King of Gondor.
