In The Hobbit, Bilbo with Thorin and Company passes beyond Bree into this abandoned kingdom of Cardolan. Long uninhabited, it is traversed by bad roads and overgrown paths. The Trollshaws are here and the sinister hill-top ruins, that Frodo later sees in The Lord of the Rings.
