A stretch of water to the east of northern Mirkwood and about 20 miles south of the Lonely Mountain. Confluence of the Forest River and the River Running.

The Long Lake was formed in a natural depression where the Forest River flowing from the west met the River Running which entered at the northern end from its source in the Lonely Mountain. From the southern end of the lake, the River Running flowed on southwards. The Lake-town of Esgaroth was sited off the western shore and formed the hub of the trade-routes between Mirkwood, Dale and lands to south and east.
