Mardil Voronwë ‘the Steadfast’ was the son of Vorondil the Hunter. He succeeded his father in the office of Steward and held that position during Eärnil II’s and Eärnur’s reigns, and after King Eärnur’s disappearance in TA 2050, he became the first in the line of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor.

The descendants of Mardil ceased to use High-elven names.

It was Mardil who introduced the revised calendar afterwards called Stewards’ Reckoning and later adopted by most of the Westron speakers, except the Hobbits.

During the rule of Mardil the power of Dol Guldur constantly increased, determining the Wise to fear the return of Sauron.

In TA 2063, Gandalf went to Dol Guldur and Sauron retreated in the East. Thus the Watchful Peace began, during which the Nazgûl remained hidden in Minas Morgul.

Mardil Voronwë ruled Gondor for 30 years (TA 2050 - 2080) and was succeeded by Eradan.
