Mewlips

A race of cannibalistic humanoids featured in Poem #9 of “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil”.
Mewlips are thought to live East of the Misty Mountains. They inhabit the cellars of decaying Gothic buildings decorated with gargoyles, surrounded by swamps, and subject to serious rising and penetrating damp. There they waylay and eat hapless travellers, hoarding their bones and their gold.
Mewlips seem to be living beings rather than spirits, and may be the forerunners of Goblins and Orcs in Tolkien’s later works.
