The Mouth of Sauron was the Lieutenant of Barad-dûr, the ambassador of Mordor and a servant of Sauron. He was sent to the Black Gate to speak with the Captains of the West on his lord's behalf before the final battle in the War of the Ring. He had no name, for he had forgotten it, and besides Lieutenant his only title was the "Mouth of Sauron".

In The Return of the King, the Mouth of Sauron served as an ambassador of sorts between Mordor and the armies of Rohan and Gondor. He tried to make a deal with Gandalf, promising to free Frodo {although he did not call Frodo by his name} if they gave Sauron almost complete control over the land. He also showed Gandalf and his companions Frodo’s mithril coat, Sam’s sword, and one of the hobbit’s cloaks from Lórien. However, his plan did not work, and his terms were rejected.

If Sauron had won the war, he would have been given Isengard from which to rule the western lands in Saruman's stead. This did not happen and the fate of the Mouth of Sauron is not known.

No one knew how old he was. It is believed that he was one of the Black Númenóreans, and had settled in Middle-earth in the Second Age.
