Pelargir was the ancient port of Gondor, situated just above the Mouths of Anduin. The port was founded in SA 2350, and it soon became the haven of the Faithful who crossed from Númenor.

After the downfall of Númenor, the haven was allowed to fall into disrepair until the time of Eärnil I, the second Ship-king. He enlarged the harbour to provide anchorage for the fleets that he built to sail to battle with Umbar. During the Kin-strife, Pelargir was held by those opposed to Eldacar, and eventually the rebels in the haven took their fleets and sailed to Umbar, where they became known as the Corsairs of Umbar. From then on, they engaged in harrying the coasts of Gondor.

During the War of the Ring, Pelargir was once more assaulted by the Corsairs, but their ships were taken over by Aragorn and his army.
