Calmacil was the son of Tar-Alcarin. Upon taking the sceptre he became the eighteenth of the Kings of Númenor.

Calmacil took this name because when he was young he had been a great captain and had won great lands along the coasts of Middle-earth. These deeds had won Calmacil the hatred of Sauron who resented allowing the Númenóreans to infringe upon his domains. The Dark Lord though withdrew from the coasts and built his power in the east and waited, biding his time.

It was during the time of Tar-Calmacil that the name of the king was first spoken in Adûnaic though it was not used all of the time. He was called by some of the King's Men Ar-Belzagar.

Tar-Calmacil reigned for 88 years and was succeeded by his son Tar-Ardamin in SA 2825.
