Tilion (the Maia of the Moon) means 'The Horned' and is derived from a Quenya root til 'point, horn'.

He begged the Valar to be given the task of steering Isil the Sheen (the island of the Moon), flower of Telperion.

In the days of the two trees Tilion was a hunter of Oromë, and he had a silver bow. He loved silver, and when he rested, he left the woods of Oromë, and went to Lórien. There he lay dreaming by the pools of Estë, in the light of Telperion.

While he steered the moon, Isil, Tilion was wandering and uncertain in speed, and strayed from his path towards Arien, being drawn by her splendour. The flame of the Anar burnt him and the island of the Moon was darkened.
