War of the Dwarves and Orcs
A six-year conflict between the Dwarves and the Orcs, lasting from TA 2793-2799. It was the first deliberate attempt of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth to exterminate the Orcs of the Misty Mountains.
The War was precipitated by the murder of Thrór. His heir, Thraín II, mustered all his people of Durin's line, and they were joined by Dwarves from other Houses. For six years, the Dwarves pursued the Orcs who had battled Thrór. In the end, a climactic battle was fought at Moria, the Battle of Azanulbizar, won for the Dwarves by reinforcements arriving from the Iron Hills. In the battle, Naín son of Grór, Frerin son of Thraín II, and Fundin son of Farin, the father of Balin, were killed. Thraín II lost an eye, and Thorin Oakenshield was wounded.
