The Weather Hills were a range of hills running to the north from the Old Forest Road, midway between Bree and the River Hoarwell.

On Weathertop, the southernmost of these hills, the Dunedain Kingdom of Arnor erected the Watch Tower of Amon Sûl and occupied it for more than 1000 years. When Arnor was divided into the kingdoms of Rhudaur, Cardolan and Arthedain, the Weather Hills were used as one of the internal boundaries. This caused great strife as both Cardolan and Rhudaur laid claim to Weathertop and the lands west to Bree.

The tower of Amon Sul on Weathertop housed the chief Palantir of the North.

In the Year 1409 of the Third Age, forces from Angmar surrounded Amon Sûl. In the battle that followed, the Dunedain were defeated, King Arvelaid was slain and the tower of Amon Sûl was razed. The palantir was safely removed to Fornost but from that time on the Weather Hills and Weathertop in particular were uninhabited.

In TA 3018, there were two other notable occurences in the Weather Hills. On October 3rd, Gandalf was attacked at night on the summit of Weathertop and on October 6th, the Ring Bearer, Frodo, was stabbed there with a Morgul-Knife.
