Lisa Star is working on a Quenya wordlist. It is basically the same as HKF's, but extended with some words from the PE12.

Check it out here (it is quite interesting): http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/9902/BasicQue.html

The site mentioned in PhantomElf's post also has a Quenya course (scroll down almost to the end of the page) It has a friendlier look than the Ardalambion one, is less technical, but doesn't have any exercises. There's also a bit of Tengwar in there. The author's opinion, especially on pronouns, sometimes differs from that of HKF.

Edhellin 'lirnen update.

There are three (3) new songs two Sindarin and one Quenya at Parma Tyelpelassiva

"Laer Glanwen"
"Laer Mithrandir o Lórien" &
"Fainala lómi"

There respective Sindarin and Quenya texts are there also but the only English translation I am aware of is that "Laer Mithrandir o Lórien" is a translation of Gandalf's song of Lórien found in LotR sung by Gandalf in The Golden Hall at Edoras.

Finnish is one of the languages that inspired Tolkien for Quenya, probably the most important one. This article by Harri Perälä compares the two languages and tells that there's actually a bit of Finnish in LOTR

Suilad!

Here's a little tip for people having trouble with learning the words:

http://www.teach2000.nl/international

It's a free flashcard program (less than 3Mb), with which you can test your quenya vocabulary!
you have to make your own vocabularylist, but thats very easy to do.
The program wil test you in quenya - english (or any other language you've written the answers in) and english(same thing) - quenya. It can also give you a multiple-answer-test.

I hope this will make your studiing easier!

That's a good tip! Thanks! Just let me add that we have the workbook vocab lists for a flashcard program here at CoE, courtesy of Eruantalincë

You can find them on the "Extra Elvish Practice" page here:

The latest issue of Vinyar Tengwar, # 46, has information that was not included in the Etymologies, or were misread at the time of publication. These are some of the more important new words and changes concerning Quenya vocabulary:

farne (foliage)
halla (naked)
halma (skin, fell)
hiuta- (to wink, hint)
norta (horrible)
norto (a horror)
nwalma (pain)
ontaru (parents, probably dual)
ranya (free)
ringwe (cold pool)
vírie (youth)
virya (fresh)

And, at last and rather surprising, at least to me, there's also a root meaning "feel sexual desire". The only Q word listed is "yére", which I guess would be a noun (?).

Those interested in subscribing to Vinyar Tengwar, an extremely valuable journal, can do so here (please notice that it's rather technical, so will be of most use to advanced students):

Ambar Eldaron now offers a very nice-looking PDF of the Quenya wordlists (E-Q, Q-E, reverse) for download. The wordlists seem to be the same as the rtfs at Ardalambion (updated 10th May), so IMHO this dowload is of most use to those who would like to print their Quenya dictionary.

http://www.ambar-eldaron.com/ilyaquettaparma.htm

This site has lots of other language information too, but most of the content is in French (and I've forgotten most of the French I took in school )

Námovaryar, it should open as a normal PDF if you change the file name (just delete ".gz"). This is probably not the 'official' way of doing it, but it worked for me

AFAIK, .gz is the compression format that they use on linux (kinda like the .zip files that we tend to use on windows). You should be able to find some decompressing software if you use a search engine.

I am proud and happy to announce that we now have an expanded Quenya word list available for download from the Resources section, courtesy of dirk_math.

This Quenya-English wordlist contains the words from the Quenya
Wordlist at Ardalambion, the Qenya Lexicon from Parma Eldalamberon #12, and the New-word lists from Elm and Gwaith-i-Phethdain.

It's a available in both PDF and MS Word format, and if you plan to print it, I seriously recommend that you choose the PDF, as it takes up less pages (48 instead of 75).

Dirk, thank you so much for compiling this very useful wordlist, and for letting us offer it here at CoE

I *think* this looks like a good place to put this. If not, then by all means just deleate and send me a pm. I just thought this was pretty wonderful...
Being a linguist, I discovered that although Tolkien doesn't explicityly say that Elves have pointed ears in his books, he does mention it the Etymologies!

The Lost Road, the Etymologies

LAS- (1) lassë leaf: Q lasse, N lhass; Qlasselanta 'leaf fall', autumn.

..........etc........Lhasgalen Greenleaf, Gnome name in Laurelin. (Some think this is related to the next and lassë 'ear'. The Quendian ears were more pointed and leaf-shaped then human.

LAS- (2) listen. N lhaw ears (of one person)

A person I know from another forum has created a morphological analyser for Quenya sentances. It's basically a word for word Quenya translater. What it does is it breaks down all the various affixes that usually occur in Quenya words (like case endings or verb tenses). It doesn't always translate correctly but that's to be expected from a machine translation.

I'm not sure how useful this might be to any of you, but I'm letting you know about it none the less.

Link:
Quenya Mophological Analyser

If you happen to find any bugs in it, then tell me and I'll inform the creator.

Hello again

Here are some links (hope they work) for sound files of spoken quenya.

http://www.lambion-ardava.de/

http://eldaryon.webmagazin.hu/download.php?op=viewdownload&cid=6

The first link has translation on Tolkiens' I Elessar in Quenya athor and orator "maewen_maiwenya" (Katharina Golz). Just scroll down the menu at the left hand side and click on I Elessar , then click on I Elessar als Soundfile zum Download . There is also a complete quenya text and a German translation. Though the english translation of the quenya text is not given the original can be read in one of the 'HoME volumes I think(can't remember which atm), or it might be 'Lost Tales' can someone help me out here?
The second site I dont know much about but there are several sound files of spoken quenya, worth listening to I think.

Enjoy

Namárië

Hi everyone

Just wanted to let you know (in case you don’t already), about (in my opinion), the most exciting event in the world of Tolkien related matters to happen next year. It is “The First International Conference on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Invented Languages-Omentielva Minya” and it will be held

quote
__________________________________________________
August 4 - 8, 2005
Department of English, University of Stockholm
Stockholm, Sweden
Chairman: Bill Welden
Papers Coordinator: Beregond, Anders Stenström
Facility Coordinator: Professor Nils-Lennart Johannesson
__________________________________________________

Here is the link to the site(hope it works):
__________________________________________________
http://web.comhem.se/~u86023928/omentielva/
__________________________________________________

They are calling for papers

quote
__________________________________________________
CALL FOR PAPERS
For Omentielva minya we call for scholarly papers on all aspects of any or all of Tolkien's invented languages, in any or all of their conceptual stages.
__________________________________________________

and you can still submit a paper even if you cannot attend the conference yourself.

quote
__________________________________________________
If you wish to submit a paper but can not attend the conference, you may send a paper to be read and discussed. In the latter case, state any directions or preferences you may have for the presentation."
_________________________________________________

Already some noted Tolkien linguists have registered to attend (well I only know of some of them ), they are:
Beregond, Anders Stenström
Nils-Lennart Johannesson
Bill Welden
Mark Noseworthy
Bertrand Bellet &
Helge Fauskanger
and many more have indicated that they plan to go.
Anyway full details can be found at the web site if you are interested.

Recently announced on "Elfling" : Evenstar, on her site Ambar Eldaron, is hosting a new fiction in neo-Quenya by Arthur Boccaccio: "iRúnië Fiondilo". Here is the link:

http://www.ambar-eldaron.com/texteselfiques/fiondil_engl.htm

The events of this story take place in Númenor in the final years before the Downfall, when Isildur steals a seed of Nimloth, the White Tree of Númenor.
Texts are presented in "Quenya-English; Quenya-French; Quenya only, Tengwar only and Tengwar illuminated. Illustration by David Wyatt.

Hi guys!

I've been looking around and found some sites to Quenya Dictionaries. I don't know if any of these have been posted or that they are just the same as others, but who knows, there might be some other words that aren't included in the other sites!

Well I'll give it a try! Here you go!:

Quenya - English Dictionary (contains some in Sindarin **not all though**)
http://www.rialian.com/quenya-english.htm

English - Quenya Dictionary (I found this very good! It contains alot of technical and complex words in English, translated to Quenya!)
http://home.netcom.com/~heensle/lang/elvish/quenya/engquen.html

Hope you find them useful!

Hello everyone,

here is a link to a little project of mine:
http://home.unilang.org/main/wiki2/index.php/Quenya

It is an attempt to write a systematic overview of Quenya Grammar. It might be rather overwhelming for beginning students, but I hope it might become a tool when looking for something.
It can of course not replace the course at Ardalambion or at this site, but it is meant to give easy access to any grammatical topic.

At this moment I have developed the material up to lesson 16. The more advanced stuff is not complete as yet, but you can be sure I will get there within the next few weeks/months.

And a disclaimer: it is my personal work, it is not written by Tolkien, it is not meant to be authorative.
So feel free to give any comments that might enhance it, but please abstain if you think that only your own version/opinion of Quenya is holy.
Yassë engë lómë, anarties calali.
