Post Please Read: Controversial Issues Threads in the Forums
on: February 02, 2004 11:44
The Council of Elrond is first and foremost a Tolkien site; our members are united by thier love of Lord of the Rings, and although this is an off topic forum, we still need to set boundaries in order to keep things in line with the board rules.

This is particularly relevant in the case of threads involving the debate and discussion of major social, political and/or religious issues. Although this is considered a PG site, we are mindful of the fact that many of our members are adults or young adults, and so we try to promote the development of thoughful, mature discussion to cater accordingly. However, while we have sought to encourage and support the debate of such major issues (when conducted in a mature and civil manner) in the past, the fact that in many (if not all) instances these threads degenerated into arguments and even hate-speech and personal attacks has led to our decision not to allow any such issues to come under discussion again.

Politics, religion and social issues are highly emotive and difficult to discuss even among small groups of close friends; the Council of Elrond has over 25,000 registered members from many different cultures, backgrounds and, hence, points of view. We must stress that we are not trying to be obsessively politically-correct - this decision was come to after a great deal of lengthy discussion among site staff. These sorts of topics are fine to talk about in the journals (so long as they're not intentionally inflammatory, or break the site rules), and if you really wish to engage in such debate, there are plenty of great forums out there in the World Wide Web where it is more appropriate to do so.

The Prancing Pony staff thank you for your co-operation, and welcome you to contact us if you're unsure about a topic you want to post, or the Head Site Admin, Rivka, if you have any problems or suggestions concerning this matter.
