OK, since there's nowhere else to post this, it's going here! Simply give me your name and it's meaning, and I'll do my best to translate it into Old English for you. And no, I DON'T use an online translator!!

What name?Your own or your On-line name?If this is what you are doing,I think you should point towards P.M. if you want a real name.If,say,50 people gave you their names some 'crazy people'(I'm not ripping off on anybody,I'm setting the scene.)Might use the 50 persons real names.I'm sorry I sound so Mommilies-ish,but I'm making a statement. If all this is false, just put in something like "P.M. Me and I'll translate it".

No, that's fair enough. OK, you can either post the meaning of your name here, if you know it, or if you don't know it, you can pm me with your real name, and I'll pm you back (and, with your permission, I'll post the translated name and it's meaning here.)

Is that better?

That's a great idea! Really nice of you to spend your time on translating! I'll be the first one. My name means warrior (I'm a girl, so you might have to make it feminine), or mistress - well, I've heard most things that indicate battle as a translation for my name (I battle, warrior, mistress, derived from Mars - the god of war, the battle,...). I think you'll find a translation for at least one of them.
Thanks a lot, and by the way, do you study Old English? That must be really interesting, it's such a beatiful language!

OK, I'll post up a list - you can take your pick!!

(Mine means Boar battle, technically, so you can imagine the probs I had making that feminine!! lol)

Warrior (f) : Freca
[FREY-ka]

Battle: (It had to be that, didn't it... of all the long lists) :Lindplega, Wig, Beadulac, Beadu, Torngemot, Gecamp
[LIND-ple-ya] [WIG] [BEY-du-lak] [BEY-do] [TORN-ye-mot] [YE-kamp]

Yeah, I'm actually teaching myself, but I'm getting some tutorage from my friends doing an OE course - I'm doing teaching specialising in English - (as long as I cook them dinner....lol)

My real name is Susan and means 'Lily'. What would that be in OE ??
If this idea takes off, we may be able to start a Names-base for OE names. Let's see how popular this becomes !!

My Name comes from Latin for "Blessing" or "Favor".I also have a Chinese Name meaning "Good-Taste-In Books(Whitch could be like (Word for Word(s)-Wyn,Right?)
My On-Line name must be a shortning of "Menelgilda" making it have Sindarin roots as something like "Heaven-Star(Menel-Gil)".And,It would be cool to have a Name Database in OE!But,as you know,The quenya one is being made now. So,lets wait on that.

Since I am not exactly certain that the meaning of my name has been correct where I've read it...

Add a Colin to the list of names.

Maybe I'll get my name in Old English more easily than I would in Quenya or Sindarin...since I can't find a thing for it in either of those.

Gilly, the Quenya names database and the Sindarin names database are both continually being updated. They don't really have anything to do with whether we start an OE database or not.

There's no disputing that it would probably be easier in OE, but don't dismiss the Elvish names completely out of hand. Your name is in the Sindarin NDB, but the problem is, your name seems to be a possible variant of several names. All possibilities have been provided however, and we base our research mainly at http://www.behindthename.com/. Also, one could always ask.

-----------------------------

Anyway... Sorry Maethorvel, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. If you don't mind, could you translate the name Michelle, which means 'who is like God?'. I'd be really grateful.

I know. I saw that on the Sindarin one. And I'd have asked for sure, if I didn't see the entry there for my name. Almost typed it, but wound up deleting it. However, I think I'll try to find what it means and ask anyhow now.

What fun!! Mine is Christin: "Follower of Christ". I'd like to see what my middle name is too! It's "Marie", which I've seen several translations of -- most of which were translated as "bitter". But I did have a translation come up in the Sindarin name database that I liked a lot: "Dew of the Sea"...if you could find that, that would be great!

This is fun! And very interesting to see again and again how much of Scandinavian there's in OE. Naneth, your OE name would be "Blomma" in Swedish

My real name is Ann-Sofie, where Ann is a form of Hannah (meaning "favour" or "grace") and Sofie (Sophia) means "wisdom". May I guess that the translation will have "wis-" in it? I'll wait and see...

This is a great idea. Well, my name is "Corina" which is supposedly of Greek origin and simply means girl. Adequate considering that I am indeed female.

Valentina: it means 'strong' 'vigourous' or 'healthy'

So you could have:
trymð, strengþu, mægen, cræft (all meaning stong)
[TR-ee-mth] [STRENG-thu] [MEG-en] [KREFT]

hildestrengo (technically, 'Vigour for battle')
[HILD-eh-stren-go]

sel, gesund (healthy)

Le suilannon, Maethorvel! Ic greata þe

Have you thought of asking Rivka to allow you to start a Names Database for Rohirric? I work on the Sindarin Names Database, along with Fíriel and Naneth. I know that they have only recently begun a Quenya Database as well. I, for one, think that having a Database for Rohirric would be wonderful!

Couldn't hurt to ask!
