I'm more than willing to work on it!

I'm afraid I'm going to be away for three weeks starting from tomorrow - keep any requests coming, as I may be popping on every now and again, but please be patient with me!

An Old English autodidact!? That's pretty cool, Maethorvel! I'd also love to get the OE/Rohirric translation of my own name, for I wasn't able to find an "English-Old English" glossary, and I'm way too lazy to flip through an "Old English-English" dictionary looking for the meaning of my name. My Christian name means "pearl", which is, BTW,
the reason why I chose the Sindarin user name "Aervir" (aer= sea + vir/mir = jewel; as there is no Sindarin word for pearl, and I had to make this one up before I came across CoE's useful name database). But an OE translation would be really wonderful! Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi, my name means "Beloved" or "Beloved Friend". If you have time, could you translate my sisters' names as well? They mean:

1. Small and wise
2. From the ash tree meadow

Thanks!

Ai! I almost feel bad to add my name... after all, you've quite the list adding up but I must admit this is very intriguing!

Julie- 'Youthful spirit' (other versions I have seen: 'youthful' or 'soft-haired')

Take your time. Dear Eru! I hope you don't become overwhelmed in this all! Le hannon!

This is great! Could I get some names translated? The first one is Kerry, is Irish meaning "Ciar's people" in Gaelic. The second name is Lynn, which as far as I can tell means either "lake", "soft/tender", or "beautiful". These are both female names. And actually I think one of the might be translated as "Naefrewyn" (I forgot what it means; it's a new name for me ) Thanks in advance!

I'm very, very sorry to add to your load, but this looks really cool. My name means 'pearl', and my sister's names mean 'descend, flow down' and 'YAHWEH is gracious' or 'white, fair, smooth'. Sorry to dump so much on you, but if you could translate them for me, I'd be most grateful.

Oh, and a database is a wonderful idea!

Hullo- I was wondering what the name "frana" meant also, my chinese name means something along the lines of "tinkling/chiming bell(s)" what would that be in OE?

Thank You for your time,

This is lovely! Do you also read Beowulf? (I saw it in Barnes and Noble last year.) My name is already revealed to me though someone else's. However, I would like to know my middle name. Nicole, as I have been told, means "nobility" or just "noble." Thanks in advance for the name, and dusting off a lost language. The world should thank you and your friends! (I really like languages!)

It seems Maethorvel hasn't posted anywhere onsite since April 2. If someone else with knowledge of Old English names would like to take up the challenge of creating names for people with requests, please let me know.

Okay, I'll take up the challenge! I don't pretend to know much about Old English beyond what a few online essays can tell me so I can't guarantee the accuracy of any of these names, but they should suffice until someone more learned comes along and corrects me, at which point they're very welcome to take over. I haven't included a pronunciation guide for each name because basically the task of doing that for the huge backlog was too daunting, but for a great pronunciation guide, try these links: consonants and vowels. Right, now to clear the backlog. Here goes...

Melissa: Hunigbeo

---

Pearl: (sea treasure, couldn't get closer) Meresinc

---

Saara: (lady/princess): Ides

---

Eric: (ever, ruler) Wealdened

---

beloved friend: Leofreond

---

small and wise: Mætewís

---

from the ash tree meadow: Æscléah

---

goddess of the moon: Gastmóna

---

woodland spirit: Bearugást

---

peace: Frið, Sibb

---

Mary-Kate: (perfect/pure) Unwemme

---

Samantha: (listener) Hlystiend

---

Erin: (girl from Ireland, lit island maiden since unfortunately I couldn't get any closer) Íegmægden

---

wealthy: Éadig

---

source of joy: Órwynn

--

joy of the father/father's joy: Wynnfæder

---

Michelle: (Image of God/ God incarnate) Gesihðgod

---

manly strength / manly vigour (strength of men): Ellenylde

---

Paxton: (trader) Cépeman

---

Kristina, Christie: (Christian) Cristen

---

Isilwen: (maiden of the moon) Mónamægþ

---

Andrea: (man's woman) Idescealc

---

Julie: (youthful spirit/youthful/soft haired) Geongmód

---

Nina: (grace) Hyldo

---

Naima: (blessing/soft touch) Bletsung

---

Anne: (blessing/grace) Bletsung

---

Åsa: (goddess, divine woman) Godcundwen

---

peacemaker/bringer of peace: (make peace) Griðian

---

cherry blossom: (fruit blossom) Túdorblostma, Wæstmblostma

---

Kerry: (Ciar's people) Ciarþéod, (those who follow a leader) Folctogas

---

Lynn: (lake, soft/tender, beautiful) (lake) Mere (tender) Mearu (beautiful) Fæger

---

descend, flow down: (descend) Sígan, (flow) Irnan

---

God is gracious: Holdhéahfæder (shame this one isn't more lyrical, it's my name too... it's just as clumsy in Sindarin )

---

white, fair, smooth: Hwítfæger

---

chiming bells: (closest I could get to this was silver song, which is, I'm afraid, a pretty poor match) Seolforléoð

---

Angela: (heavenly messenger) Heofonlicboda (Angel) Engel

---

Astraea: (star maiden) Steorrmægð

---

Hannah: (Graceful/wise) "grace wise" - Árgléaw, "wise grace" Wíshyldo [s and h pronounced seperately]

---

Nicole: (noble) Æðele, Hærlic

Phew, okay, that took ages. Guys, some of you asked for names that are already there. I've copied them into this post but it'd be nice if you could check the thread before adding a new name with a meaning identical to another name already up. Thanks!

I used the list above to find my first and middle name, but I'd also like to know the translation of my last name, which translates to 'little.' Do you know what it would be?
