Neenime, Beautiful. The last stanza gave me chills, I like it!

Now if I may, a few more.

With this next poem I wanted to capture the sorrow and the longing in the journey west.

Into the Far West Lands
We tread on paths past the setting sun
Our time has come, our reign is done.
We weep with clear, far seeing eyes
Lament the passing of crystal skies.
We long to breath the fair west air
To hold the kin already there.
The sea calls from that last shore
We feel the pull, stronger than before.
Our steps are saddened,
But our hearts are true,
There is nothing left that we can do.
We walk the forests and cross the plains,
Never again will we feel these rains
Or breath this heavily scented air,
We leave these lands to other's care.
Our minds are troubled, though our step is lightm
We mourn our passing into night.

This came when I was reading FOTR. When Sam and Frodo meet the elves. It seems to me the lament of a single elf that Samwise heard in his sleep -but it echoes the feelings of them all.

Lament of an Elf
Listen, Heron's screams grow louder
And count the passings of the hour.
Wehn hobbit folk are asleep in their bed
And starlight shows the paths we tread.
When moonbeams cry to lift the veil
And in our hearts we feel the chill.
Silent tears fall to mark our way
And mourn the passing of the day.
You do not see us as we go,
But in your deepest dreams you know.
The song we cry, the sorrow we sing,
Will Haunt the lands and flood the stream.
Our memory we leave behind,
And hope it passes, unscathed, through time.

Neenime- I love it! I must agree with EldarChild that the last stanza is wonderful and chilling

EldarChild- Two very beautiful poems. Your words really expressed what you wanted them too. Very nice.

Thanks, VilyaTook and Eldar Child, I appreciate your comments. I am always reluctant to share my work for fear of appearing amateurish or cliched. I guess I should stop worrying about that and just enjoy sharing it with others. After all, there's no requirement that it be professional, right? We're just appreciating our God-given talent to express what is within us.

Yeah, I love that last stanza, too. Besides recognizing the loneliness of the hero, it's also a message to myself to ease up , lay down the sword (figurative, not literal, tho' I do collect swords) and let others help me.

Another attempt by me at Elven Poetry....

What An Elf Is

Have you ever watched a blossom break through a sleeve of frost
On the fragile fingers of a tree
When the last freeze fell on an eager morning

Sat patient to watch the swelling pomme grow
From flower to fruit, without blinking;
Then tasted its sweetness to break your fast

Did you let the seeds fall on fertile earth
And wash the roots with water warm as rain
A tear for a year until fully formed

Sing to the sapling so that it hears, learns
Until it finds a voice of its own
And these melodies teach you

Green greeting spring
White smiles at summer
Red apples bobbing for autumn
And to winter, a harvest of ice

Did you listen as it sang its songs
From the first chord until the last plaintive note, fading
Sap dry and bark peeling and pale

Limbs bowed to the naked ground
While you still remember the sweetness of that first fruit
And smell the pollen on your fingertips

Only an Elf can understand what Time is
Every moment engraved in the memory
Until myth and history are one and the same
So old that the mountains and stars know your name

dreamdancer I especially loved the imagery of your poem , the quality of the hidden, mysterious world.

Love your name, too. I am very interested in dreams. I go to dream discussion groups and regularly interpret my dreams. I don't ususally dance in them, but then I do some dancing in waking life, so maybe that's enough.

Lothithil, I must echo Vilya here. I believe you captured the 'essence' perfectly in your piece...I too almost cried.

Neenime: I know what you mean about being reluctant to post.

This is my newest. I'm reading The Two Towers and it's Legolas' reaction to Fangorn:

Fangorn
The air hardly moves beneath the thoughts that block the sky
By the trunks from which the mist may rise.
As straight forward as an eagle flies, and twice as thick,
Lies evil fashioned brick on brick;
But here the woods are not as deep.
Here the trees may seldom sleep
But whisper stories as they go,
Waiving their branches to and fro.
The woods are rooted beyond my time
Though they must oft decline.
The histories and songs they reap
Echo promises the trees still keep.
The legends here still hold true,
Though witnesses left are but few.
Happiest I could have been
If I had come in days gone by,
When fairer was the greenest den
And clearer was the evening sky.

I don't want to clutter the boards so here's a 'sneak peak' at my writing page(s). That way if anyone is interested in my other (newest) poetry they can look at these, and I won't take up too much space here.

Hi. How do I become a member of the poetry club? I have enjoyed reading some of the poetry posted here, but did not have time to read all of it. It is nice to see traditional rhymed poetry, so often scorned these days. There are some extremely talented poets here.

I am posting a poem I just wrote today about my son, who loves The Lord of the Rings. He has seen the first two movies. I have told him we have to read the books before he watches the last one--I would rather he learn the ending from the book than from the movie. This poem gives you a good idea of how my little LoTR fan spends his days. Unlike most of my work, it is not really rhymed. It was fun to write, simply because its inspiration is so much fun to watch! I hope you enjoy it.

LoTR Fan, 5 Years Old

He hands me his plate and asks for more.
“I’m a hobbit, Mom, you know, and always hungry!”
I serve another mound of mashed potatoes,
He eats, as only a hobbit can do.

He swings his plastic sword around in circles,
Then flings it down and grabs instead his bow—
A plastic hanger pillaged from his closet
Suffices to make him feel like Legolas.

“Orcs are coming, Naneth,” he shouts warning.
“Don’t worry—I’ll protect you from them all!”
He strings an imagined arrow on the bow,
Pulls back and releases it, defeating all his foe.

Christmas tree needles lay scattered on the floor—
He grabs a broom and begins to sweep with me.
“I’m Frodo, and I am helping Arwen clean.
After all, she saved my life after Weathertop.”

He takes again his sword and gazes at its blade.
“I am Eldarion, son of Aragorn and Arwen.
My father will teach me to wield this sword
And we will hunt orcs together!”

We snuggle in his bed after nightly prayers.
“Arwen,” whispers a sleepy voice to me.
“I’m Luke Skywalker visiting Middle Earth.
“May I live here with you?

“Tomorrow the Death Star will come down
On Galadriel and Arwen’s homes.
And Aragorn and I will fight Stormtroopers
And save you both from Darth Vader!”

A day of battles wearies even the best of rebels,
And so I pull the covers to his chin
And kiss my little warrior on the forehead.
He sleeps, as only a boy can do.

EldarChild- you made me feel as though I was in Fangorn. Superb

kellidra- All you have to do is post poems or even just hang around to be a member. It's not really a traditional club. Your poem is really cute. It's nice to hear about younger fans with lots of imagination

I'm a new member to The Council of Elrond, and I stumbled onto this thread yesterday. I spent two hours reading all the poems here- they're beautiful. You all have quite a way with words and style.

Anyway, here is my first attempt at poetry. It's called Erui, a word that caught my attention when I was reading the Appendix to Lord of the Rings. It's the Sindarin word for "lonely." This poem is written from Arwen's point of view about Aragorn.

Erui

You are countless miles away
In a heartless wilderness of foes.
You journey away from me,
As should I from you.
But I remain here,
In this disquieting tranquility,
Waiting in tears and in hope.

I am joyless but not hopeless,
For I know that while we both live,
Something in this land has the chance
To be eternal,
Because I will wait,
And you will return to me.

Were I to abandon your life
To save my own,
I would forever be in Peace personified.
But peacefully I could not live,
For immortality pales against
Eternity.

Hope dictates
That we will love in life once more,
That our love will be everlasting.
But whilst you roam,
I will wait,
Praying and dying,
And until you return,
I shall feel only
Love and erui.

Whoa *claps* that was lovely! It made me so sad. Well done!

And viola! I have a poem of my own to share!

Devotion
Glorious is the song
now brighter than the day
the fairest of all things
to walk amoung the fray
The true unspoken words
are greater than the lies
to hear you speak them now
to gaze into your eyes!
Oh that this true devotion
that I never could define
was not that of perfection
but in the heart of thine!

Hello again! It's good to see this thread moving along! I'm back with a couple of my more angsty poems.

This one is from a "Lost" fanfiction that I wrote, very sad, very hopeless...at least to me!

Flaming

Falling from grace.
You hit the ground hard.
Mud coats your face;
You stare out, alarmed.

Falling from grace.
A life shut away.
Losing the race,
Flames burn all your days.

The love was there,
Just hidden from sight.
My heart was bare,
Was waiting for light.

We found ourselves
Burning in the fire.
The old man delves;
Our own needs were dire.

Hold on to life
While the time is near.
Turn from the strife
Of a wasted year.

We're all burning!
The choice is your own.
Time is turning...
To ash and to bone.

This next one includes a phrase I've always wanted to use and question I've been asking myself. One day, I was finally able to include it in a poem. I also was humming a tune to this, so it's really a song.

Do Roses Bleed?

The voices of the world
Have all gone astray
The spirits in the earth
Have faded away

Do roses bleed?
Find me the answer
Do you believe?
Is this the way?

When day has left the realm
Will you still be there?
Blood of the rose is found
Upon the hand bare.

The same ones who chose
Have bled with the rose.

So many magnificent poets we have! Good job, everyone!

Dínfaroth and the Silmaril

With hands like sun-warmed marble
Nienna guides my fingers
Trembling, I softly graze the smooth glowing surface
Of one of the rescued Silmarils

Slightly does that gem shine brighter
As if in reaction to my touch
No burning, no pain of any kind
Except for the ache one feels at looking upon rare beauty
Knowing that this now will become a memory
More grand than things I have not yet seen
Paling their loveliness in its measure
Casting a shadow forward through my life

That was beautiful Lothithil. It described the Silmarils perfectly. I especially liked the part that said "the ache one feels at looking upon rare beauty." The juxtaposition of "ache" and "beauty" jumped right out at me and really made me feel what it was trying to convey.

Well, I have written another poem. It's the longest that I've written yet.

I always felt that the depth of Elrond’s pain was never quite shown enough in the movies or in the book. He is a father who has recently learned that his only daughter will die. That pain is one of the most unendurable a parent can experience, or so I’ve heard. The one moment that I felt Elrond’s complete despondency was when he asked Arwen, “Do I not also have your love?” That line was the starting point for this poem.

Tears in Immortality

She rejects the gift of the Valar,
Eternity.
The sea calls,
But a power stronger
Than that of the Grey Havens
Holds her here.

There once was a ship that could bear her
Away, away with her people,
Away with her Ada.
Now there is nothing for her
But death
In all places.
And I can do nothing.

She will have me sail
Into Bliss
With the shadow of her death
Upon my thoughts,
Upon my heart.
Without her,
Eternity will be only
Regret and sorrow.

She will dwell here,
In this land of impermanence,
While I endure eternal happiness,
Divided from her by an
Omnipotnent sea.

She will fade
As I live on.
And then one day
She will die.
Will my sight reach so far?
Will I know of her death
In another land?
Or will I spend
Many long years
Questioning her vitality?

My tears fall
For the impending doom.
They fall not for this
Forsaken land,
But for her,
Who would have herself
Forsaken.

It is a dying man
For whom she stays.
She is terrified that
He may not come back,
Not aware that
I am consumed by grief,
A grief that could
Drown the heart of any mortal.
Ada innas al gar an inc
Ah im, ú-‘erin veleth lîn?

She chooses him
Over herself,
Over me.
She will be happy with him
For short years.
I will be heartbroken
Without her throughout my
Immortality.

Note: The Elvish is (not literally, but nicely translated): A father should not have to wonder / Do I not also have your love?

Rochelena that was beautiful.
I loved that line in the movie and your poem brings tears to my eyes. I can feel for Elrond.

I just wrote this the other day

Eowyn's Curse
She never stopped to feel the rain pressing ever down
No time to waste for smiling face, no joy for shining crown.
She never stopped to see the dip of the rising Sun
But only watched the darkness slip o're Rohan on the run.
She did not see the crystal blues or feel the airy skies.
All she saw the darkness grew and with it then the lies.
Her gaze could chill the warmest heart
And from her lips few words did part.
Rohan Shield Maiden though she was, a maiden made of stone
With locks of golden Elanor and skin as white as bone.
She thought that she did love but once
She found him to whom her heart was true,
The other was cure.

I wrote this poem when I was entering in acontest. I didn't win and I hope u enjoy it. Its about my favorite race iMiddle Earth: The Dunedaine Rangers

Ranger Song:

We are the Rangers,
Strong Rugged Men who don't fear danger.
We gaurd th Shire and hunt evil things,
and in our spare time,
grab a pint from thePoney where the people there are so phoney.

They try to challenge us to sword fights and silly contests,
like mud wrestleing till dawn or drinking or stareing contests,
thinking they can beat us.

But we when we win,
which is nearly all the time,
they cry their wittle eyes out and run home,
screaming to their mamas

We also love elven maidens fair,
who don't nag at us to brush our hair,
or take baths when they see us,
like some mortal women do because they can't stand our manly stench.

Instead the maidens ooh and awe
when we tell them stories of bravery
and killing things like
ugly orcs or giant scary wargs.

Then we dance and sing till dawn
or until their fathers chase us away
with pepper spray.

That is all,
we can't sing no more,
for Ronul has spotted a dozen or more orcs
and if we don't slay them now,
they'll cause havoc and confusion.

Some triolets, for Valentine's Day in Middle-earth:

Maeglin, son of Eöl

Maeglin's torment and awful fate
Idril dancing beyond his reach
He saw Tuor and knew such hate
Maeglin's torment and awful fate
He let Bauglir through seven gates
Gondolin's strength by lost love breached
Maeglin's torment and awful fate
Idril dancing beyond his reach

The Men of Middle-earth

Between two brothers or two friends
A hearty handshake will suffice
No flowers or candy need extend
Between two brothers or two friends
(Still, there's no need to oft pretend
That a big hug is not quite nice!)
Between two brothers and two friends
A hearty handshake will suffice

Eöl and Aredhel

Dared Eöl to love the Lady White
When Ar-Feiniel gave her heart
Sorcerous Elf and metalwright
Dared Eöl to love the Lady White
It broke his heart, did his wife's flight
In death he bound her, with a dart
Dared Eöl to love the Lady White
When Ar-Feiniel gave her heart

Melian and Elwë

No mighty spell or woven trap
Did Melian use to Elwë catch
His head he laid upon her lap
No mighty spell or woven trap
Their folk their footsteps could not map
Once Elf and Maia sealed their match
No mighty spell or woven trap
Did Elwë use to Melian catch

Wonderful poetry everyone!
Here's one I wrote dedicated to my mother, the real source of my love of fantasy literature.

As I lay in bed at night
my mother read by one small light
"Read aloud!",I always asked
Mom never complained about the task
Her quiet voice sang in my head
and brought to life the books she read
She conjoured wondrous worlds to birth
of Camolot and Middle Earth
These timeless tales became my play
I fought with knights and kings by day
then eagerly to bed I'd sail
to hear the next chapter unveil
I'm older now,too quickly grown
My mother's books are now my own
I read the stories that she read
in my solitary bed
Her voice I hear still in my mind
The memories following in kind
I wonder if I'll have one day
a child of my own to play
and if she'll whisper,"Read to me!"
and in my words new worlds she'll see
of Camolot and Middle Earth
and the true meaning of worth

hey All! I've been gone for awhile, so I figured I shouls re-introduce myself. LilPippin, posted last at least 3 pages back. I thought I should post another poem so here it goes, I do not think that I have posted it anywhere else on this site so:

Ballad of the Twins(or Because of You)
by: lilpippin

You’ve held my hand
In the dark of night.
You’ve bathed my soul
In your glorious light.

You’ve stroked my back
When my heart was filled with tears.
You’ve held my trembling form
When my thoughts were filled with fears.

My heart’s still beating.
My wounds have stopped bleeding.
My eyes are still seeing.
Its because of you.

When stress lead my life
You were there to take my load.
When I walked the wrong path
You lead me down a different road.

When anger made me lash out
You never gave up on me.
And even if I didn’t speak
You always heard my plea.

My heart’s still beating.
My wounds have stopped bleeding.
My eyes are still seeing.
Its because of you.

You’ve helped me achieve my dreams
I’ve flown above the sky.
You’ve raised me up where I’ve never been
And now I have wings to fly.

My heart’s still beating.
My wounds have stopped bleeding.
My eyes are still seeing.
Its because of you.

(This was originally a poem based on one of the twins' feelings as a brother for the other one. I realized I never used the twins' names so I could call it another name and it would no longer be LotR.)

Go EldarChild! I hope that your poetry gets the rich recognition that it deserves!

Here is the latest DarkElf poem, for your possible enjoyment:

DarkElf in the Age of Numenor
Return to Lindon

He left me standing by the Sea
bitten by the cold steel of reason and the wind
and made his way away
disappearing to my eyes
The piercing cries of the gulls
carry the sound of his mourning
so that when I hear them
or see the bobbing beat of their hovering wings
tears might close my throat as I remember

Close my fingers over the burning metal of the blade
Dragging toe through sand, returning
How many days had I walked to come here?
Days melt into the Sea, darkness escapes it
and in time I come back to Lindon
To the sight of ships wallowing at anchor
Of light gleaming off of spar and sail
Of the voices of the Folk in harmony with the wind

I have come far enough for now
and sinking down on a tussock I give myself over to grief
Too much taken away, too much change
What can fill the empty places in my heart?
When will my voice be mine alone?
Across my palms are etched the inscription on his sword
As I watch, the red marks fade and disappear
Yet I still feel as if I bear those words
Written on my soul in flowing script
I am a weapon that can wield itself
yet I want a hand to guide me

Rising I go forth to seek my delayed reunion with Glorfindel
Let Eonwë and Ereinion bide for now

hello all,
I've been around CoE for quite a while but I've never posted anything in this forum though I love to write poetry..
so I will start with the most recent poem I write, please tell what you think of it

On distant shores I dance
In the dark, under a starry sky
There is a soft breeze
That touches my skin lightly
And every now and then
A soft salt drop of water
Reaches my face.

I laugh, brightly and joyfully
And wave at you
Then I take you by the hand
My other hand runs among your cheek
As if in a dream I look into your eyes
Your eyes, ocean alike
You’re so beautiful, but so fragile it seems…

Clouds are moving from the east
And shadows are cast at our faces
I can no longer feel your hands on my shoulders
Everything else begins to fade…
Before my eyes you drift away
It has all been a creation of my mind
Never will my heart be filled this way…

There are some wonderful poems in this thread! I loved reading them. Here is another of mine.

Age of Man

Lord Elrond,when you set sail
Did you look back?
Did you see what the future would entail?
And was it black,
like ours?

Lady Galadriel,you saw so much
Did you see this?
Was there a day when mankinds touch
was a deadly kiss,
like here?

O Mithrandir,with knowledge great,
Your light prevailed
But did you save the the Earth?
Or was that fate veiled
from your eyes?

Hi! I'm a sort of half-poet. I write lyrics to songs, but they are basically poems, and they all are LotR style. Here's my first one, about Frodo's thoughts about leaving Middle-Earth...

Shire Song (to the tune of “The Sally Gardens")

I’ve grown up in these meadows
All green and full of life
And danced around the Party Tree
To the sound of drum and fife

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

I am only a hobbit
Small and innocent
But into the dark of Mordor
It was I that was sent

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

It was I who was burdened
With the Ring of Sauron
And the feeling that it gave me
Will never be gone

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

I have longed to return here
Through all that I have done
But I look on happy faces
And their joy, I will have none

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

I’ll leave behind the people
And the places that I know
But you’ll be there for the others
Even after I go

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

Be there for Merry and Pippin
And Sam with his wife
Oh, keep them happy and healthy
I shall miss them all my life

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire!
You are always there for me
But I cannot bear to stay here
I think I’ll cross the sea

Oh the days will still go onward
The clocks will still chime
But I’ll miss you every moment
Farewell for one last time

Oh, Shire! Oh, Shire
You were always there for me
But I could not bear to stay there
So I sailed across the sea

How does it sound?

*waves* I have some poetry in the fanfiction section, so I thought I'd check out this thread. There are a lot of good poems posted here, and I'm impressed, but for some reason my personal favorite is the one EldarChild wrote about Tom Bomadil.

I haven't written "real life" poetry in a long time, and I wasn't very happy with it, either. My fanfiction poetry is mostly Silmarillion-related, but there are a few LotR ones. Usually they're character-monologue type things, and so far they all rhyme, all the good ones at least. I could never get the hang of free-verse that isn't just randomly arranged. I tried it once . . . and apart from the structure problem, I was writing Feanor, and that alone was enough to get me to run away. He's an intimidating muse.

There's one exception to my usual character-monologue poems. I wrote a long, whimsical poem, "The Siren's Song," about Maglor going mad (he has enough time wandering alone for that, I'd say) as he sings by the shore, and calling up images of the Noldolante. And he loses himself in it, a sort of self-inflicted punishment, and doesn't notice the horrified sailors crashing on the rocks. Not exactly your typical fanfic Maglor, is he? I wrote that late at night. Sleep deprivation has some odd results sometimes.

Usually, though, my fanfic poetry comes from thinking about certain scenes and wanting to get into the character's head. The Maglor-siren connection, though, occured to me out of nowhere . . . it was too fascinating not to use.

Can I post links here to fanfic poems I found on other sites? I can think of some that I really like.

Hello all! I just stumbled upon this thread, and was very impressed, inspired, and touched by the poems that I read. I have been writing poetry off and on for probably. . . hmmm. . . three or four years. But after this past summer, I've hit a bit of a blank space. I've really had no time, or energy to write something.

But after reading all you have posted here, I've gotten a bit of a "creative boost" and am working on another poem. So, thank you for that. *tips hat*

Most of the poems I have written are an expression of my feelings, and it helps me get some kind of sense or order to them, even if it's really complicated. So I may not share them as openly as you all do, but I think the challenge idea is fun, and I will submit poems by other authors, and perhaps occasionally, one of my own.

So to start off with, I'll submit something that I heard on the "King Arthur" movie. (The newer one with Clive Owen and Keira Knightly.)
In this movie, there is a song, and they only sing the first verse, and bits of chorus, but I filled in the gaps. Here goes:

v.1
Land of bear,
Land of eagle,
Land that gave us birth and blessing,
Land that called us ever homewards,
We will go home across the Mountains.

ch.
We will go home, we will go home!
We will go home, across the Mountains!
We will go home, singing our song,
We will go home across the Mountains!
v.2
Land of life,
Land of freedom,
Land that gave me hope and memory,
Land that spurred me ever onward,
I will go home across the Mountains.
(repeat chorus)
Hear our singing,
Hear our longing,
We will go home, across the Mountains.

Feedback is much appreciated. Thank you.
