A lot like the 'tell newbies what your favorite fics are' thread. Which older fics (on this site or elsewhere) would you consideder to be classics? Just wondering.

OFUM (The Official Fanfiction University of Middle-earth) by Camilla Sandman -- a lovely satire on LOTR fandom and the world of would-be fanfiction writers in 60 (!) chapters, and the only Gimli-romance I've ever read
Unreal City by Altariel: three short gapfillers (Death by Water, What the Thunder Said, The Fire Sermon) about Faramir in The Lord of the Rings, along with their companion piece, The Burial of the Dead, an excellent vignette from Denethor's POV, and their sequel A Game of Chess (a story about F/E's marriage)
The Shards of Time by A.L.Milton, in which Faramir's grandson tries to answer the question whether Éowyn was a heroine or a deserter
The Resolution by A.L.Milton, another vignette from Denethor's perspective
Where the Stars are Strange by Dwimordene, a tale about Aragorn's adventures in Harad
Love in the Moments Between by Dwimordene, a gapfiller for FOTR and a very touching A/A romance
Farewell by Dwimordene, a story about Gilraen's last years :sob:
River Flowing ... again by Dwimordene, who is really one of my favourite FF authors and gives us a short vignette on war in Ithilien from a TTT character's POV (and the choice of character was an interesting one indeed)
Till Death Do Us Part, the last FF by Dwimordene which I'm going to recommend here , a short fic about Aragorn, Halbarad and the Pelennor Fields
At the Going Down of the Sun by Tanaqui, a rather sad Hobbit-fic concerning absent friends
a few "Maglor in history/Elves in our modern world" AUs, like Finch's Lasciate Ogni Speranza, Ithilwen's Chance's Strange Arithmetic, Sphinx'sSome Sort of Reality, lipstick's Captain Tinkerbell and Ëarmirë's War Dust
The Elventh Hour by Zimraphel, an account about the last day in the life of Tar-Míriel
The Face of the Enemy by Soledad, which re-tells the Battle of the Pelennor from the perspective of a captain of the Haradrim

I don't know if these fics are really classics, but they are definitely my favourites and are worth readng, I guess. And in case you should be wondering... all my fic recommendations can be found at www.fanfiction.net, www.storiesofarda.com or www.henneth-annun.net (and all stories are PG to PG-13).

I read a lot of fanfiction, mostly Silmarillion-based. My favorite fic on this site is:

Taming the Wildflower by Sulriel. [Rated R]

http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Fanfiction&file=index&options=DisplayStory&storyid=2302

It's a well-researched, well-told Maedhros/OFC romance. What more could you ask?

I'm addicted to Silmfics, and I read a lot of different things (gen, het, slash, novel-length fics, short stories, really short pieces under a page or so, practically every character you can think of). I tried making a list for this thread, but it got too long. I can narrow it down, though, if anyone's looking for something in particular.

One more enthusiatic recommendation, randomly picked from a long list. Another Silmarillion story.

The Taste of Water by Le Chat Noir.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2312492/1/

"Maglor experiences artist's block as he throws the Silmaril into the waters. Everything cannot be perfect, even if you are the greatest minstrel of the Noldor; closure cannot be found, and the past comes back to haunt you every morning at the same hour."

Here we have a piece of originality in Maglor-angst if there ever was one. A bit difficult to read, but then so is The Silmarillion. In both cases, it's worth the effort. Written in a frantic style that really captures Maglor's state of mind.

Well someone has to put it down so I guess it will be me:
The Mellon chornilcles by cassia and sio. Through They got alittle too repeatative at the end for me

There's also To walk at night and A sea of troubles by Nili (fanfiction.net) I think they're great and Nili is a very good writer.

Erestor's fics on fanfiction.net are all really funny (apart from the serious one). Very good.

I can't think of any great non NC-17 erestor or Glorfindel fics at the moment.
I'll post more when I think of them.

Well, if you really want to know my opinion on this, I think that all my own fan fictions are classics.... Mwahahahahahaha!

*Moderator grabs pv by the scruff of her neck and forcibly evicts her from what was formerly a serious discussion, but has now degenerated into a shameful orgy of self-advertisement...*

Ah now ... I'm not quite that rough ... a bit of self advertising is ok, so long as new threads are not started for this purpose .

Now if only I had time to read some fanfic ... perhaps soon when renovation of the LHH is completed .

Self advertising? I wouldn't dare. And anyway, my list of recommendations is ridiculously long without it!

Just my other favorites of Le Chat Noir's stories. She captures the madness of Feanor's sons brilliantly, and keeps them sympathetic characters, somehow. It's no small feat.

Ivresse
"The story of Curufin son of Fëanor, and his emotions -lack thereof, more like- and passion for the 'acting game'." A brilliant and frightening psychological story - this is the most complete, brutally accurate and convincingly sympathetic portrayal of Curufin I've ever seen. At HASA and ff.net:

http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?STID=269

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/882369/1/

The Blind Windows
"Curufin returns from Mandos, and has a discussion with his brother Maglor. Can there be healing for the Sons of Fëanor?" The sequel to Ivresse. Farfetched, maybe, but convincing in an odd way. At ff.net:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1193827/1/

Ambarussa
"Focus on the surviving Fëanorian twin; a character study in insanity and loss of identity." Follows the version of the story in which one of Feanor's twins died in the ships at Losgar, and gives a frighteningly believable view of how the surviving twin would turn out. An experimental but oddly fitting writing style - like The Taste of Water, it's a bit difficult, but well worth it. At ff.net:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1362906/1/

Of Iron and of Steel
"The House of Fëanor has a somewhat vehement meeting, Fingon rescues Maedhros from the Thangorodrim, and the latter passes the High Crown on to Fingolfin." A refreshingly different take on a well-worn story. Among other things, it shows the sons of Feanor as individuals - so often they're lumped together when they operate together.

Hmm . . . Erestor fics are few and far between, and for some reason, the ones I've seen are humor. Well, good luck.

And oh yes, more of Le Chat Noir's fics. She really is one of the geniuses of Silmarillion fanfiction, both with brilliant ideas and an innovative writing style. Oh, about ratings - all the stories I've recommended are K+, which under ff.net's rating system is for 9 and up.

Towards Freedom
"Finrod and Beren in the dungeons of Sauron." (Yes, it's been done before, but this is an unusual and effective way of writing it that really brings a well-known tale off the page. Frightening, moving and thought-provoking.)

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1370657/1/

Underground

"Maglor in the 20th century. The Parisian underground. A young high-schooler boy. Peace can be found." Beautifully written, simple, poignant. I like this just as much as some of the Maglor-in-history stories, although its setting isn't quite so "important."

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2116311/1/

Who Calls and Claims and Takes

"The story of Voronwe - the little boy who fell in love with the sea, and escaped her deadly embrace." This one has a way of making the sea-longing a little more understandable to us mortals - I've never seen a story that did it so well.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/892576/1/

If We Fall Anew

Elrond/Maglor slash; complex relationships in the aftermath of war. (Slightly Alternate Universe, since in this fic Elrond and Elros are not twins and Elrond is a bit older than in canon.) Beautifully written, convincing, and it made me cry.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/882362/1/

Shadows ere Darkness

Sequel to If We Fall Anew. "In which Maglor has to choose between Elrond and his Oath." Somewhat disturbing - I'd rate it a bit higher if I were her, T/PG13 instead of K+/PG.
But it's Le Chat Noir, so it's disturbing-with-meaning. You've been warned.

Here are some "Rings" recommendations, for once. I usually read Silmarillion fanfic, because it's somewhat easier to find the good stuff, but these ones are beautifully written - I can't recommend them enough.

A series of drabbles (100-word fics):

A Long Year by SilverMoonLady

"During the thirteen months of War of the Ring (as counted in the Red Book), many hearts wondered and waited, hoped and despaired, feared and fought. A few windows into a darksome year ..."

http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Fanfiction&file=index&options=DisplayStory&storyid=3374

Two vignettes:

White for Mourning by Uieniel
"What of the women left behind in Harad?"

http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Fanfiction&file=index&options=DisplayStory&storyid=4825

Coivanda by Uieniel
"Wandering, fighting, living, dying...a way of life for the Dunedain."

http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Fanfiction&file=index&options=DisplayStory&storyid=5240

Does anyone have favorite stories in the Noncanon/AU section of this site? I'm interested in well-written AUs, but I've just looked through some of them briefly and can't find anything.

It was a collaborative roleplay for a hand full of writers that went on for about nine months, but I have to say it is a classic fanfiction of an event in the appendices of the Lord of the Rings books. It's called Darkest of Days and was set in the days leading up to the fall of Fornost in Arthedain in 1974 of the Third Age.
Eighth King of Arthedain - It was in battle that I come into this Kingship, and it will be in Battle when I leave it. There is no peace for the Realm of Arnor. Read the last stand of Arthedain in the Darkest of Days.
