QOTW Dec26th 05- 2.II. Aldaron and Erendis on: December 26, 2005 04:33
Tar-Meneldur, after reading the letter from Gil-Galad
'May Eru call me before such a time comes!' he cried aloud. Then to himself he said; 'Alas! that his pride and my coolness have kept our minds apart so long. But sooner now than I resolved it will be the course of wisdom to resign the Sceptre to him. For these things are beyond my reach.'
Tar-Mheneldur here sows true wisdom. He realizes that his disagreement with his son, over Aldarion's time at sea has blinded him to matters occurring over the sea. He also realizes that his son is far more qualified than he to deal with the new threat arising in Middle-earth and decides to forget his emnity with his son and give him the kingship so that he can deal with it.

Yes in fact Tar-Meneldur takes off his responsability as King and assigns Aldarion to continue his task. Since his son has better qualities than himself, he thinkd that Aldarion would be a better King than he.
