OCC: Well if you want to be really angsty make it the Harad to blame for the death of her son and lover... That would create very interesting problems, wouldn't it?

OOC: Actually dear, Kirden was a girl And, they already are. When she betrayed the Harad for love of Kairth, they ended up eventually recapturing her, him, and their daughter. They burned Kairth alive as punishment, and flung the baby in with him. My poor girl. *pats cardboard-standup-Eadan's head*

OCC: Right...Sorry! I got confused with the names... So Kirden is the daughter. The guy's Kairth and those two are dead. Has Eadan taken revenge on the Harad yet?

We need an OCC thread I think...

(OOC: the much awaited next post, since I have been sick for most of the weekend. I swear my nose was running like a faucet.)

Durninad shifted awkwardly in his saddle. He disliked having to lead from horseback, since it makes him stand out. He surveyed again the men he had to defend this side of the river with. Almost everyone was on foot since they were not a people who used horses to the level that the Men of the Mark use them. This was his one disadvantage he had. Durninad did not have many horsemen to counter the mounted Easterlings.

He continued to scan down the line and spied the many banners that the smaller units. Most of the men where from Dale, but some men were gathered around a few blue banners of Lake Town. There were also dwarves in the ranks, for a war on Dale was also a war on the dwarves of the Lonely Mountain.

Durninad had moved the line closer to the river, to make sure it was the Easterlings that would not have good footing when charging into his lines. He then drew his sword and waited for the coming storm.

Nauriel watched as the 'men' (dwarves seemed to appear doted here and there) drew up a line near the river. Noticing at once that she was too far back now, she ran gracefully and quickly to the line's left edge. The river was shallow enough for fording here she surmised as otherwise there would be no point in this stance. Fitting a dart into her blowpipe carefully, she knelt down to spread her weight and keep herself steadier as she prepared to fire.
The Easterlings were still a ways away and were almost all mounted. A blattant disadvantage and Nauriel figured that she best target the horses. Pulling out her pack for her arrows, she spread it out before her on the ground and quickly applied a new paste to a few darts - this one was stronger and quicker than the other. It worked better on horse than the other and was the only one that brought down wargs. Nauriel swapped the dart in the blowpipe for a new one and brought it to her lips to aim. Still too far away... She would have to wait a bit.

Gerr stood silently staring as the army charged at them...They seemed to get closer and closer, faster and faster. An icy panic griped his heart, Fear, totally and udder fear... Inside his heart was pounding, outside his was telling to man next to him that he would see him after the battle...Inside he wanted to turn and kill the woman that had caused him so much pain these last few minutes.... Outside he nodded to his captain showing that he would always stick by his side.... Inside he felt like just a child caught up in things with great men... Outside he was a great man, strong and brave... Inside he let the fear go, he let the unknown, feared, hated go... Now he was what he appeared to be...Now he was ready........

Durninad watched as the first of the Easterlings splashed into the cool waters of the River Carnen. The enemy horsemen stayed on the other bank. They want to keep us occupied with their infantry so they can flank us with their horsemen, he thought to himself, They may also want to see if we really want to stay and fight. Of course we will stay!

He turned to Ronad and said, as the other army bore down on them, "Keep our horsemen back, I will need them intact for later."

Eadan could hear the eerie pre-battle silence as her rounded eyes, darkened to indigo with shock, raced across the parchment.
Impossible! she thought, forcing herself to stay cool. Impossible! Mordor was leveled not three decades ago. Sauron was destroyed! It's impossible!
But each dozen parchments she read made her more certain.
The Harad have allied with Mordor.
She dropped the parchment from nerveless fingers, spinning around, and almost raced out the door. In her haste and shock, she forgot caution; she flew out the tent door clutching a parchment, and sprinted for the woods, towards where she'd left her horse.
When she got there, the horse was gone.
The sentry-her erstwhile friend, Mairsth-was waiting.

The first row were in the water now and splashing through in a hurry. They were easily within range but the horsemen were not. Nauriel sighed slightly and guessed that there was some tactical reason the horsemen were waiting. Maybe if I get right down to the water I can get a horse or two and cause a panic, she thought. The infantry were still on the Easterling half of the river, so she moved quickly right to the water's edge, keeping fairly low and walking cautiously. As she was on the edge of the line of soldiers, her movements would not be as noticable as those of the centre. She reached the edge of the water as the Easterlings reached the midpoint of the ford. She might just manage to get a horse and she knelt down, her knee in water. Nauriel brought the blowpipe to her lips, aimed and spat. The dart flew straight across the river and caught in the hindquarters of the nearest horse. It reared and then collapsed, throwing its rider off and scaring the other horses. Nauriel prepared a second dart in seconds and spat that one towards another close horse. It hit but fell out promptly. The horse still reared from the sting of the dart but it didn't collapse. It reared again and plunged into the water, almost throwing its rider. Nauriel smiled grimly that she'd at least managed to cause confusion. Turning quickly she returned to the line before the Easterlings made it to shore.

As they splashed there way across the ford Gerr's arrows shot them down. ZIP! a cry and then a voice was silent forever Zip! Ping! missed, hit, missed, hit, hit, missed was in a way how it went three fourths way across. Zip! hit! they were there! Throwing down his bow he grabbed his sword and pulled it from it's sheath. For one second the world seemed to stand still... Both army's looking into the other eyes... Some were bagging for forgiveness other only wanted blood split, both were to die that day....Crash! They hit Gerr fought with vengeance taking all his anger out on those he did not even know. Cutting them down he made his way through there army. They were all around him.... He was an excellent fighter swinging up right then down for the kill... The sound around him was defining the noise of steel on steel of those dieing.....

The Easterlings struck the line with such force the center of the line was being pushed back. They are trying to break my center, Durninad realized. He was not really expecting this kind of move. Durninad thought that the Easterling commander would try to flank him. They were concentrating with everything they had on his center.

As the defensive line was bending back from the pressure, Durninad saw that the enemy cavalry was reorganizing across the river.

He turned to Ronad, who had just returned, "Ronad, take the cavalry across the river now. Engage the horsemen across the river. Make sure they do not cross the river!"

Ronad nodded, knowing he would probably not come back from this, and left.

Durninad at this point, dismounted. He drew his sword and charged into the battle in the center.

The Easterlings reached the bank. They were focused on the centre of the ranks, trying to force them back. Arrows and darts were of no use - anybody could be hit and friendly fire would be costly. Nauriel had at once pulled out her knives and held them loosely, alternating her grip as the situation demanded. She kicked, punched and stabbed any Easterling within range and being at the end of the line, she suddenly could see the ranks buckling in the centre and then the cavalry were riding by to engage the horsemen accross the river. Having no sword was proving problematic because her reach was limited - she had to get quite close to be effective but the Easterlings had swords and were keeping her at a distance. She saw Durnidad and Gerr in the distance fighting. She then had to lean back to avoid a blade and Nauriel quickly ducked under the Easterling's guard and plunged her right knife into his chest. She cringed slightly at his shocked, dying expression and looked away.

Ulfang was fighting with his company of dwarves on the right flank. They were being pressed hard but holding their own. He could see however, that the center of the line was being pushed back slowly, and that the Haradrim cavalry was grouping for a charge on the far side of the river. If they were allowed to charge their line would desintegrate quickly. He quickly gathered the men closest to him and they charged forward, but made little progress against the Haradrim lines.

(OCC - Decided I'd add another post while we're waiting for East_Emnet)

In a strange moment of calm, Nauriel managed to extricate herself from the fighting line. She could see the Haradrim cavalry gathering now and the Dale cavalry trying to cross the river before the other did. Ducking under a blade again, she finished off the troublesome Easterling and then carefully fought her way towards the river. Nauriel had to skirt the center of the battle and found herself suddenly outside the press of bodies. She waded into the water, pulling out blowpipe and arrows as she went. Keeping an eye out for hostiles, the woman moved accross the ford on her own. The horsemen hadn't noticed her as she was further up the river and she settled in the shallows on the eastern bank to snipe at the ennemy cavalry. She quickly prepared a dart and spat it through the blowpipe at one of the horses near the centre of the cavalry unit. The dart broke the skin and clung on, its point soaked in poison. The horse reared at the sting of the arrow and then collapsed backwards, blocking rider under it. The other horses reared too and became nervous and unruelly. Here and there a rider found himself dealing with too much horse and fell unceremoniously off. Some of the riders had sense to try and find the cause of the horse's death but Nauriel had flattened herself in the shallows, hiding below the surface. Catching her breath, she examined the battlefield and was dismayed by the progress of the Harad...

As the day wore on, the lines of Dale were pressed slowly backwards. The Haradrim cavalry had been prevented from crossing the river by a wonderfully coordinated series of brief charges which, although succesful, brought the Dale cavalry heavy losses. The center of the line was weakening, but a determined and desperate resistance held by a thread. Several serious attempts had been made to try to break the Haradrim flanks, but their superior numbers could not be defeated.

Towards midafternoon, the battle slackened, but it was clear that it was a calm before the final assault was made.

A momentary retreat of the Haradrim confused the Dale men who harried them as they turned. However, the Haradrim gathered into a tight knot and with weapons bristling from the edges, they formed a wedge; they surged forward with a blood-curdling yell and shattered the center of the Dale line. The troops were now divided but a hoarse yell from the commanding officers sent the Dale men at the flanks of the wedge. Unexpectidly the flanks collapsed and the head of the wedge was cut off. The Haradrim continued recklessly forward and surged through to the rear of the line, turning about to attack the back of the lines. The Dale soldiers were now fighting on both sides and were more than aware of their dwindling troops.
Watching this bold move from the river, Nauriel gasped in shock and hurried back to try and aid the flagging troops. She reached the line and hurled herself on the nearest Haradrim, knives ready. She slashed at him and succeeded in causing more injuries than receiving...
The Dale cavalry had to abandon their charges of the Haradrim cavalry to rescue the back of their own lines; they galloped around the flanks of the battle and crashed into the Haradrim battalion at the rear of the fight. The horsemen caused more chaos than before and succeeded in wiping out most of the enemy troops that had gotten through the line. They whirled around at once to return to the river side.

Chaos reogned on the battlefield. The lines of both sides were broken and almost all the cavalry decimated. Ulfang managed to fight his way free from the thick of the battle gathering men as he went. No one knew where the captain was and the flag had fallen leaving the Dale men without a point for rallying.

Once free of the main battle, Ulfang tried to rally the closest men for a charge, but the few remaining troops were scattered too much for any organized charge. The chaos continued until nightfall when the armies drew apart and withdrew to thier respective camps.

When Ulfang had time to survey the damage he found everything in confusion. Most had some sort of wound. He had been luckier than most but still had many minor cuts. Worst of all, no one could find Durninad and there was no one to get things back into some kind of order.

The light had faded and the din of battle ebbed away. The Haradrim withdrew in surprisingly ordered ranks. Their cavalry limped away on exhausted horses; they had not made even it across the river for all their trouble. The Dale men were withdrawing chaotically and assembled gradually in the camp.
Nauriel had a deep cut on her cheek and on her right arm. She'd not moved quick enough and now she was following the men back to the tents. The disorder was increasing in the camp as the injured and exhausted men realised that their captain was missing.
She nearly tripped over one of the soldiers and apologised absently. Slowly she made her way to the few who seemed to still be thinking clearly. Her throat was sore and she was so thirsty; her voice cracked as she tried to speak.
"Does anyone know where the captain is?"

Gerr limped slowly back to the camp. His right lag had a deep gash running across his thigh. Practically falling over ever stick and stone that was on his path on the way back. He let out a loud moan has he sat down in front of what used to his tent. Undoing his armour as best as he could as he fall over in exhaustion.

(ooc: I live!)

Durninad was in more pain than he had ever been in his life. The wound on his forhead had finaly stopped bleading. The hastily wrapped bandage was begining to slip off his leg. Nevertheless, Durninad limped toward the camp.

Chaos had broken lose after he has charged into the battle. The wounds to his leg and head came completly to his surprise. I am not the warrior I used to be, he thought. Gritting his teeth, Durninad made for his camp.

(OCC: *Hugs East* You're back! Hurrah! Hope you approve of the battle )

Shrugs had greeted Nauriel's question... The captain was not in the camp it seemed - not yet anyway. She got some water from one of the barrels and gulped it down. Then she walked towards the edge of the camp and sat down. Pulling out her pack, she dug out some pastes and salves for wounds and did her best to patch her cheek and arm up. She glanced up and saw a man making his way from the battlefield to the camp. He seemed familiar, very familiar. Recognising him suddenly, she rose to her feet and called out to the rest of the camp.

"The captain! He's coming!"

Her instinct to help kicked in and she hurried over to support him - injuries were obvious and looked quite bad.

Durninad's vision had begun to blur. Suddenly, he felt like a weight had been lifted off of him. Someone was supporting him. Have I reached my camp? Wheather or not it was, he could not go much furthur on his own. His leg began to give out from under him, but person supporting him kept him upright. He wanted to wash the blood out of his eyes so he could see again, but he was to tired.

Nauriel could feel the weight shifting as the captain's legs began to buckle. Taking more of his weight on herself, she kept him standing just barely. Yelling out to the camp, eventually she saw a few soldiers coming. At once they took the captain from her tiring arms and carried him to the tents. Nauriel followed them and helped the soldiers patch up Durninad.

As soon as he saw that the captain's was being taken care of Ulfang went to look for some help in getting the camp organized for the night. Most of the men were too hurt or tired to do anything but between what remained of his dwarves and such men as were able and willing he managed to get enough to keep up a watch till dawn.

When the watch was set and most of the camp settled down for the night he went to the edge of the river and looked across towards the Haradrim. It looked well organized and watch fires burned all around the perimeter. Ulfang was worried that the almost leaderless men would not be able to respond properly if the Haradrim attacked at first light.

Shaking his head worriedly, Ulfang walked back to his post and sat thinking for the rest of his watch. When he was relieved, he asked to be awakened for any sign of activity in the enemy camp, and fell asleep instantly in his tent.

Nauriel left the captain's tent once it was clear that he would be fine and wandered out in the camp. The darkness of night had descended and the camp was asleep. She knew that she needed rest, but the events of the day replayed over and over in her mind. Shaking her weary head, she went to the tent she'd been given the day before. Nauriel quickly finished patching up her arm and cheek; she let herself collapse on to the bed and slept at once. Dawn would come too soon and perhaps another battle...

Gerr slowly came back to his senses. Stiffness had settled on his lag and he could barley move it. Groaning he sat up. The pale gleams of the red dawn were showing. Men lay about some lass hurt then others all in need of food... Dragging himself into his tent he grabbed some dried food from a couple of days ago and started to give it out as best that he could.
