I believe they use gold, and pieces of gem and/ or glass. I am not sure though, since i only read in translations and the things i summed up might have been more convenient than the original system used by Tolkien.

Check out the chapter in Lord of The rings, when Bilbo just left and everyone is searching his treasures.

True they used gold and silver coins, but the most common currency was brass I think. It is mentioned in the Fellowship of the Ring, um...After the hobbits met strider and were about to leave for Weathertop...can't remember the name of that chapter. Hope that helps a bit.

minstral_of_the_dawn makes reference to the chapter "A Knife in the Dark" where Tolkien does indeed refer to silver pence (pennies) in the purchase of Bill the Pony. So it is safe to use that reference if you are in need of using coin in a post of any kind.

I just happened to spot this thread...

In the Elvish dictionary are two words: mirian, which is a coin used in Gondor. Also, there is canath, which is described as a 'quarter'-part of a mirian ~ if that helps any.

I heard of a coin called a Tharni at one point circulated in gondor...
Which I think was a quarter silver coin...
but then It was a long time ago I read that in some RPG or other...

...just found the reference: in Q&A...

A: Tharni is equivalent to 1 silver penny. It is a Gondorian term. Due to licensing issues, however, Decipher is not allowed to use the Gondorian terms

castar: a coin of some sort, of which a tharni was the fourth part (PM:45)
tharantîn "quarter, fourth part" (PM:45)
tharni "quarter, farthing" (the fourth part of a coin, but also used of the farthings of the Shire) (PM:45)

I hope thats useful!

It would be cool, but you would have to think about people makeing counterfit coins out of melted down peices of jewlery. i know the Aztecs used Coco beans as money, though they also drank an anceint form of "hot Chocolate" and only the realy realy rich people drank it.

Yet...if money was acctual gems and presous metals, what would we make jewelery out of?
