Post Melkor's minions- Orcs
on: July 10, 2007 05:46
I thought i'd start some threads on the forces supporting Melkor, allied to him, or bred by him.

What are Orcs? Where did they come from and what can/do they do for him?

reference threads from the 'Discuss the Books' forum;
Orclife 1. - Origins and Free Will
Orclife 2. - Weapons and Tactics
Orclife 3. - Mortal or Immortal?
Orclife 4. Females, Breeding and Upbringing

PB: I just edited in the full titles to the Orc links. Hope you don't mind ~ Cirdaneth

It's been a while since I read the books, so I'm a little out of shape, but as I recall Orcs are derivative creatures: they're not something new that was created by Melkor, but rather an already existing beings (Elves?) that are corrupted/tortured into an inferior life form.

That seems significant for the kind of being Melkor is, but I've always felt that Tolkien didn't tell us enough about the Orcs themselves. They seem to be sort of void, always defined in negatives: not Elves, not free, not kind,...
