Then Mim opened his eyes and pointed to his bonds; and when he was released he spoke fiercely. ' Learn this fools!'; he said. 'Do not put bonds on a Dwarf! He will not forgive it. I do not wish to die, but for what you have done my heart is hot. I repent my promise.'
After hearing this, they still followed him to his hidden home!!

Turin and his men didn't believe that they had anything to fear from Mim and that they could overpower him or kill him if he tried to betray them.
... and Turin repeatedly reminds Mim of this possibility on the journey. He makes short intimidating comments, partly to wear down Mim, but also, I think, to keep his men from thinking he is being soft. They are a dangerous bunch and hasty. His leadership is on a knife-edge at times.
