1) Would it have made any difference if Turin had gone directly after Finduilas instead of searching first for Morwen and Nienor?
2) Why does Turin give up his sword?

I'd like to think that Turin being a brave and skilled warrior, would have been able to rescue Finduilas. But honestly, the orc host was so large and there were so many captives to free that he would have likely been recaptured himself.
2) Why does Turin give up his sword?
Because of his deeds with the sword he has made it known all over the land and it is also known that Hurin's son weilds that sword. He gave it up to attempt to hide from his doom again. He knew that if his enemies or anyone else saw or heard rumor of the sword, they would know where he was.

1. perhaps it would have made a small difference in time or locality but after all i think his and his family's doom were already to come
it wouldn't be turin if he hadn't made the "wrong" decision
2. i agree with dolwen. since he was even named mormegil after his sword
