In this thread we are going to post illustrations relating to each of the chapters. I'll start with those compiled by Nienna-of-the-Valar, and then adding links to any additional that I can find. members should feel free to add their own artwork and to comment on any of the works displayed here.;;

*sigh* How does one illustrate music? A tough question, yes? And so, for this chapter there are almost no choices out there. After a bit of persuasion, our friend and CoE member, Atalante_star agreed to allow us to use her own artwork to illustrate this chapter. Enjoy

ATALANTE-STAR: I love your art work, yes it's hard to illustrate music but I can feel the movement and fluidity in your art,two qualities in music.Well done

Amazing! I read this chapter last night, and these show it perfectly! Only Tolkien's words could describe them. Again, amazing. Great job!

Those are very nice and creative works of art! The different colors and patterns change the mood accordingly for each part! Good job!

Valaquenta

This is another chapter that is rather difficult to find illustrations for, without adding in spoilers that is. I have found a few pics that work, but know that we will see much more of the Valar and Maiar in later chapters! Enjoy! And again, any suggestions, please PM me

Valinor by Ted Nasmith (I can just about guarantee that you'll see a lot of Nasmith in this thread as he has many illustrations for the Silmarillion and I like his work, so sue me)

Image

Halls of Manwë by J.R.R. Tolkien (It's lovely to be able to see Tolkien's own vision of this)

Image

Varda by Herb Leonard

Image

Oromë by Mikel Janín (I really like this, though maybe it is not how I picture Oromë, it is really well done)

The picture of Varda is very beautiful. The way she glows and the stars around her makes her very goddess like. Tolkien's drawing is also very interesting with the different levels of light and dark between clouds.

*blush* Thanks k and everyone else who has commented on the selections so far. I am trying to really pick 'different' pics, that we aren't really used to seeing. And, yes, as Elenisil said, you can see so many more in our own CoE gallery!

(note that these illustrations cover this weeks chapter as well as next weeks-PbHf)

Of the Beginning of Days

The Lamp of the Valar (Illuin) by Ted Nasmith

Image

The Two Trees of Valinor by Joseph M. Olonia : I really enjoy this illustration a lot and it is not one that is typically seen. You can see Yavanna in the background and Nienna in the foreground and the lovely Trees to either side.

Image

The Two Trees of Valinor by Roger Garland : This is the image that comes most often to mind when I think of illustrations depicting the Two Trees, so I have included it.

Image

Of Aulë and Yavanna

Aulë by Ted Nasmith : This is only a sketch which I do not know if he has ever actually completed. It's a great scene.

Image

Yavanna by Per Sjögren : This was a recommendation by Figwit, but oddly enough, it was one I had already chosen anyway as I really liked it. Look closely and you shall spy some Ents there!

NIENNA: Valinor gives me goose bump, when I look at it I feel drawn to it almost like a hidden place that you have to see and discover.Looks like a spiritual world.I like the trees of Valinor by Roger Garland. It is the way I pictured them too.

Cuiviénen by Ted Nasmith - this is a favorite and always what I think of when I think of Cuiviénen and the awakening of the Elves.

It shows very well the wonder of the awaking of the elves.

The Silmarilian sets the stage and the artwork found here by Ebe Kastein, Mikel Janín and others is a perfect pairing.

I realize I'm jumping ahead a bit but has there been an artistic touch applied to the Awakening of the Secondborn?

As always, please feel free to PM me if you have any suggestions for illustrations that pertain to the upcoming chapters!! Enjoy

Of Eldamar and the Princes of the Eldalië

Watchtower of Tirion by Linda Garland

Image

Fëanor, Nerdanel, and 4 (and a half *wink*) of their sons by Jenny Dolfen - Jenny is one of our invited artists.

Image

Fëanor by Catherine Karina Chmiel - Fëanor is probably one of the most difficult characters in all of Tolkien's works to 'capture', but there are some really nice pics out there. This one I like quite a bit but if you have any interest in other illustrations of him and/or his sons, have a look in the gallery and use the search box, typing Fëanor, or any of his sons' names.

Image

Alqualondë by Sue Porter - this was obviously in a book, thus the crease.

I am looking forward to when we get into the later chapters, as there are not a whole lot of illustrations of things that are occurring at this point as much as there are of some of the characters. But I will get something up *wink* even if it is just loads of pics of Fëanor *giggle*

Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor and Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor

Míriel and her Tapestry of Sorrows by Jenny Dolfen - You just have to feel badly for Fëanor's mother and wonder what of the things she was able to foresee would not have occurred had she lived.

Image

Fëanor by Ivanneth - Ivanneth has some other beautiful illustrations of all seven of the sons of Fëanor in our gallery. If you would like to see them, try this link.

Image

Nerdanel also by Ivanneth - Fëanor's wife, who bore to him 7 sons, only some of whom received any of her more mild mood.

Image

And what would these chapters be without the big baddie himself

Morgoth by Mikel Janín

Image

And, for fun, since there are really no pics of the Silmarils, here is one of Fëanor having himself a nap after working so hard on something by Darkmage

( Nienna-of-the-Valar's post from the earlier thread)
Once again, feel free to drop me a PM if you have any suggestions for illustrations for the upcoming chapters and please, check out our gallery to do some searching for pics on your own

And onto the next assignment: Of the Darkening of Valinor and Of the Flight of the Noldor

The Darkening of Valinor by John Howe

Image

These last three are all illustrations by Ted Nasmith, the first two being sketches he has done.

The Oath of Fëanor

Image

The Kinslaying at Alqualondë

Image

The Crossing of the Helcaraxë

Of the coming of Men into the West;

Finrod Felagund discovers the Men of Bëor by Ted Nasmith

Image

Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin

Just some interpretations of the Fall of Fingolfin this time. Enjoy.

Fingolfin Rides Out To Challenge Morgoth by one of our invited artists, Eissmann

Image

Fingolfin Battles With Morgoth by John Howe - This is probably one of the most popular images of this 'event'.

Image

Fingolfin Battles With Morgoth by Per Sjögren

Image

Fingolfin Battles With Morgoth by Abe Papakhian - This is one of my favorites. I really like this very much and it's probably going to stretch the page but *sigh* I like it.

all submitted by Nienna-of-the-valar

Akallabêth

The Eagles of Manwë by Ted Nasmith - I really like this image, as the peoples of Númenor see the warnings from the Valar, and yet cannot or won't heed them.

Image

The Ships of the Faithful by Ted Nasmith - Is Nasmith amazing at painting water or what?

Image

The Drowning of Númenor by Sweet - _I_ personally like this image, even though I guess it bothers some people that Númenor's architecture here looks Greek-like. It is far better full sized though.

Image

Tar-Míriel (Ar-Zimraphel) by Ted Nasmith - This is from the new Silmarillion and I *love* it. Again, the water is amazing.

Image

The Lost Road (No Longer A Straight Way) by Alessandro Maccari - This image was suggested by a member by the name of Tyrhael. Thanks for the suggestion!
