Post Obscure or popular characters?

When it comes to reading fanfiction, which do you prefer to read about: characters who are barely mentioned (and often only in the Appendices) or the "popular" characters? (For example; Aragorn, Legolas, Frodo, etc.)

Personally, I prefer to read and write about the character who are probably only mentioned in one sentence. It gives me a lot of room to be creative and yet abide to canon. Plus, I find it hard to locate a good fanfic about the characters that everyone always writes about. How about you?

I like reading people's individual character development on some of the more "popular" characters, but I have to say that Elladan/Elrohir are to die for XD

I love love love to read fanfics of the more popular characters, especially Aragorn. But I am real picky when it comes to how they are written and if they have original stories. I don't like to read fanfics of obscure characters because I don't know them, lol. Also I just don't have any interest in them.
