Post A Hundred Years: My Friend, My Enemy (OOC to join)
on: August 09, 2014 12:13
Thud! Thud! Thud!
A young man grinned as each of his practice arrows slammed into the center of the makeshift target. His sandy brown hair and grey eyes might have implied that the boy was a Gascon, but the massive longbow grasped in his hand confirmed that he was English. The youth stroked the bow reminiscing about the good days in England when he had been carefree; unlike now, where a French army marched upon the fortress Hennebont to lay siege it.
---------------------------------------
“Alfred don’t tease him,” a pretty woman gently chided her husband.
“Alright wife, come Peter,” a tall well-built man called to his son.
Alfred led the small family into a shed behind the house; there laying on the edge of a table lay a beautiful bow.
“Oh father,” Peter gasped.
“Its Spanish yew son, the finest I could lay my hands on.”
The yew bow was a single solid length of wood but looked as if were made from two pieces of wood joined together side by side. The shaft had been cut where the honey colored sapwood from the outer tree joined the dark brown heartwood from the middle of the tree. The bow was over six feet tall.
“The white back of the bow pushes against the dark belly making your arrows fly faster and further,” Alfred explained. “And here is your first quiver.”
The man pulled a leather quiver with a strap dangling from the side. Inside was 24 blunted cloth yard arrows.
“Father…thank you,” Peter stammered.
“Practice well son you deserve a new bow. This one should last you well into manhood.”
“Yes sir, I will.”
“So has this been a good 15’th birthday?”
-------------------------------------------
The young man sighed, that had been three years ago. He pulled his arrows out of the target and slipped them into the quiver, now worn with age. The bow, although still an inch taller than him, seemed as if new, its power never diminished by age. He placed an arrow on the string and drew it back to his ear.

Ettienne ruffled his sister Amelie's hair as he moved the giggling girl away from him. She protested, shrieking, "Non, Ettienne! Joue avec moi!" No, Ettienne, play with me!

"I have to go pack," He told his sister quietly, as her voice had echoed loudly in the vast house. "You know I mleave in three days. I will play with you before then."On the way to his room, he passed by his grandmother, Clare, embroidering something with thin, blue thread, a flower on grey silk. She clicked her tongue impatiently as she went. Ettienne knew that the cost of the thread and needle alone would be enough to feed a family for days. A family without wealth, that was. Grandpere was nowhere to be seen. He was still upset with Ettienne for enlisting.

He went into his quarters and shut the door.

Peter placed his arrows back in his quiver and walked briskly down the streets of Hennebont. He approached taller, nicer houses. He knocked on one of the doors. Amelie, his friend Ettienne sister, opened the door.
"Pourrais-je... parler avec... ton frère?" he asked in broken French. "May I speak with your brother?"
==================================
“Why, why will you not take Henri as your second in command?”
“Because father, I want someone my age who won’t take over my command,” Francois sighed.
Two men, one old one young, stood arguing in a room, which had no adornment but a desk piled high with papers.
“I don’t think that is wise they could make mistakes that a capable soldier wouldn’t make!”
“Alright, Henri can be my advisor.”
“Who are you choosing?”
“I know not. Perhaps I will find someone at Hennebont.”
“Fine, you go with my blessings son.”
“Thank you father.”
In a few minutes Francois de Laville rode with a troop of 20 to assist Charles of Bois in the siege.

Amelie stared at thew stranger for a moment, not recognizing his face. Then she turned and yelled, "Ettienne! Un homme a et porte!" Ettienne, there's a man at the door!

He heard his sister yelling, and, sighing, Ettiene placed some of his clothes back down. He wasn't sure if Amelie was speaking the truth, or if she was just luring him out to play with her.

Amelie clutched at his leg as he approached the door. "Bonjour?" He asked, before he was quite there, and then the man's face became clear to him.

"Peter!" Ettienne cried, shaking his friend's hand fiercely, speaking in English for his benefit. "It has been too long, mon amie!"

"Ettienne!" Peter replied.
He leaned on his bow and looked at the little girl clinging to his friend's leg.
"Is this your sister?" he asked smiling.
Then he grew grave remembering his unpleasant job.
"Lady Montfort orders all Bois sympathizers out of Hennebont. The French army will be here in a day's time."

"It is," Ettiene said with a smile, gently nudging Amelie forward. "Say hello, Amelie." She girl hid behind him once again, but poked her face out from behind his knees. The he straightened. "I was aware of the thread here, but did not know it would come to be so soon."

"The Earl of Northampton won't be here in time and rumor is that a Genoa fleet is going to intercept them," Peter explained. "Lady Montfort can't take any chances of a traitor. Not that you would," Peter said hurriedly.
He watched Amelie duck behind Ettiene again.
"I hope we shall not meet," he said quietly. "Father left me to fight for Lady Montfort."

The news washed over Ettiene like a wave. "I hope that neither one of us faces any more betrayal."

"Aye."
There was a long uncomfortable silence.
"She gives you one hour before she will have her guards escort you to the gates."
============================
Francois brushed the dirt from his clothing, wouldn't want to ruin such lively colors. They had joined Bois and were now a day away from Hennebont.

"An hour!" Ettiene said. "I must hurry." He left his friend and raced up the steps, hurridly packing his belongings into the travel bag he had pruchased. Not many would go out of their way to purchase a bag that would be ruined shortly after it's first use, but Ettiene was different- the social circumstances of his upbringing, however he tried to shake them, encouraged it.

Peter walked slowly back to his quarters. There was one thing for certain. None of his grey goose-feathered arrows would find itself near Ettiene. A bell chimed woefully. Closer to the walls a great commotion stirred. Lady Montfort rode back and forth on her horse cheering the men, urging the women to prepare earth sacks, boiling water, oil, and pitch, and instructing the children to bring rocks to the walls. The lady wheeled her horse round and spotted Peter.
"Thatcher I need you on the walls with the crossbowmen."
