I enjoyed your first post as well! Your portrayal of Lord Elrond is much different than I normally see, and I liked it!

Hello all, I'm an old CoE Rper come out of retirement to try my hand at RPing again.(Not really that old, I started RPing when I was 12-13 and I'm 24 now) I see that you are quite far into the planned plot for the thread so I will take up whatever part is most needed. The plot of this thread "Darkest of Days" caught my eye and I've done my best to read up to the point you are at now in order to be up to speed. If you'll have me, I have a Dunedain ranger Bregolman or I could be an elf with the group coming from Imladris. I saw that Arveleg's character Marcadil has 5 healthy men left from his original command. I could be one of those if it works for everyone. Thanks.

Mae govannen Naurmaethor! Welcome back to CoE!
Yes, 2nd Company took a beating, with their detachment getting wiped out near the Weather Hills and the rest from the battles and retreat from the North Downs. It would be good to have you write in one or both of your characters!

Naurmaethor, Good intro of Bregolman! Your post caught me out when I was about to post, so I worked it in toward the end. Ready for some siege warfare? Happy Writing Everyone!

I saw there was another post in our RP, and when I got on the thread I was surprised to see we have a new member! Welcome aboard Naurmaethor! What do you know? It looks like we have five members now!

Great job everyone! I'm going to get a post together and bring our poor people in Fornost some aid.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone! It’s hard to absorb Tolkien and not want to partake or contribute to the amazing world he created! I was just thinking ahead of the escape plan from Fornost. Because, obviously, as the lore goes Fornost falls in TA 1974. Our plan is to have the escapees flee to Rivendell, correct? Does that mean at some point all in the city will flee? There will have to be some way for those fighting to try and ensure that women and children are able to escape as safely as possible. Maybe at some point a small force will have to lead the weakest away secretly at night? Just not sure if that had been thought through.

Also, are there any plans for this thread to cover the defeat of the Witchking in the following year? The reinforcements from Gondor finally arrive a year after Fornost is taken and overwhelm the forces of the Witch-king. Glorfindel leads a force of elves from Rivendell and that is when the prophecy is made that the Witch-king will not fall by the hand of men. If any of our characters were to escape to Rivendell and we did like a “1 year later” sort of deal some of our warriors could be involved in the attack on the Witch-king at Fornost and get a chance to kick HIS butt back to Angmar where he came from. Just some thoughts I’m throwing out there! I know I’m getting a little ahead of things but just trying to help contribute!

Post Darkest of Days Direction?
on: February 03, 2015 04:43
The way I read it, the Lore of the Appendices has it that the city falls and is sacked, and the inhabitants are driven out and fled west with the sons of Arvedui. King Arvedui and his men (I would assume his Royal Guardsmen?) held out on the North Downs until being driven northwest toward the Ice Bay of Forochel.

Being that this RP is not quite canon (per Eldarion’s opening summary), it’s playing out a bit different and there are a few outcomes that could happen. Here’s a summary of how I envision it unfolding from this point…
After a a siege of some time, the city manages to hold out, even if barely. It is fighting a sickness, a plague of some kind, and I’m thinking it affects the enemy as well, weakening them just enough for a last-ditch breakout attack. When the Dunedain makes this attack out of the city (allowing King Arvedui & his men to fight and hold out on the North Downs), the enemy gets in behind them and gets a foothold in the city. This is when inhabitants and the remaining soldiers “flee west”. The city gets sacked and utterly destroyed per Lore. I myself haven’t thought much further ahead than this.

I would be interested in how all the other writers (Cenor, Eruwestiel_Evensong, ItarildeSirfalas, and Naurmaethor envision the course of this RP.
I’m thinking we could do pretty much anything we want with it since Eldarion has not been here since November.

An added note is King Arvedui must have had a reasonably sizable force of horsemen as they not only fought off and “bought time” for his sons to get away with the remnants of the surviving Dunedain, but he had in his possession two of the Palantíri (The Annuminas Stone and the Amon Sul stone). They were of course lost later in the Ice Bay of Forochel with the King and his remaining men when the ship Cirdan sent to rescue them floundered in the ice.

Just a bit more food for thought. I was thinking of writing a ‘background post’ of the events with King Arvedui, and maybe his use of one of the Palantíri. What do you all think of this?

I like different angles of both the previous suggestions.

There could be a small group that is able to flee to Rivendell, but most of the people would be trapped within the city until its fall. I do like the idea of having some people escape to other places though.

I am still mulling over this, so would like to see other ideas and opinions.

In the meantime, what do we do about the plague? I would like to see if we could at least basically cure it. It has been going on for more than a month now, and many people have already died from it. I feel our people would still have plenty to deal with if that one problem was basically eliminated.

Sounds good Lady Song. The plague bit was pretty much Eldarion's idea, so since he isn't here to carry it, the healers should be able to contain if not cure it.

Thank you for the input, Sir Arveleg!

How long is the siege going to last? Eventually the enemy will begin to break down the outer defenses of the city.

I read something on one site that said there were probably a force of Elves and even Hobbits at Fornost. Is this true? I am mostly just curious, because at this point we have only five Elves and a rather small force of able men.

That has been all we have written about. I would think the King has his Royal Guardsmen, and his sons would likely lead sizable units. We have only been talking of the forces that were in the North Downs... so they (1st & 2nd Companies) were pretty badly beaten up.

I would think the siege would go on for a couple days and the city walls will suffer damage.

I don't think there is any canon (that I know of anyways) that says elves and hobbits were in Fornost. Of course with our RP here, anything is possible.

Barad mentions the 3rd Company and they may be in the city already.

How are we going to get the wounded out? Tie them to horses? I know Song and I have three (put together) characters that are in the Healing houses.

I think the "1 year later" is a good idea to bridge the time in-between the battles.

I like your thought Arveleg on a final breakout attack against Angmar the enemy forces get behind us and into the city but that could allow the women and children to flee west. We can't have all the Dunedain die because the remnant will form the Dunedain as a small tribe existing for the protection of The Shire and Breelands. If there is enough interest by the end of the RP we could go forward with the battle a year later that defeats the Witch-king

My last post just served to bring all my characters up to speed, in the story. I hope to contribute more detail in my next posts.

My apologies Naurmaethor for not seeing this until now. Living in the southern-eastern hemisphere of this here planet of ours makes timing a bit chancy.

Great post by the way. Since you have posted, I could add the dialogue if you wish.

Yep, that works! When I initially was thinking of my next post I didn't know if I'd have enough material without including your character's request of me. But, then I was able to get a good bit out of sharpening my sword so it all worked out. Looking forward to seeing what's next from everybody!

Post Dukhalas - Rhuadurian Scout
on: February 05, 2015 08:50
Great run of posts going here everyone! Ildë, if your rushed post are of that quality, I can' wait to see one where you aren't rushed.

Personally, I sometimes find it is the rushed writings that come out better. I don't have time to over-think things.

I had an inspired moment while writing previous post where I mentioned a scout for Angmar. With ItarildeSirfalas's mentioning the clumsy scout in theier last post, I was inclined to flesh-out a character that came to mind. Is he a bad guy with good intentions? A good guy gone bad? Or an amoral neutral? Don't know where I'll take it. I'm toying with having him knowing Dauwna or making him some relation of Dauwna's since they have some shared similarities of heritage, but haven't decided yet. We'll see how it goes.... here's his summary:

Name: Dukhalas
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Race: Rhuadurian Hillman with a trace of Dunedain blood
Height/Weight: 6’2” 194 Lb/88 Kg
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Merchant Trader/ Hunter/Spy/Mercenary. Currently being paid to be a Scout for Angmar.
Appearance: Lean and muscular with a close cropped beard Hair is sandy brown that he keeps well cropped.
Eyes are light grey/green and his skin is lightly tanned.

Skills: A skilled hunter and a sly trader. Until recently, he had managed to move freely through Arthedain, working his trade as a traveling merchant of goods.
He has some skill with a knife and short sword, but excels in archery. His ability to move quick and with stealth has had its advantages.

Personality & Bio: Born to a Rhuadurian bar wench in a room at the Forsaken Inn. His mother left and went back to her home in the Ettenmoors shortly after. As he got older, he would work with a tanner who taught him his trade. He would at times travel with him when he went to Bree for the markets. Dukhalas was always watching and learning, and his ability to slip around unnoticed allowed him to learn and know much. He was clever, yet he was always felt a distrust by the people of Bree. He would go there less and less. As he grew to adulthood, he took over the tanning business, and started traveling to Fornost to trade goods. His leathers were considered good quality there at the markets. One could have wondered how it was he was able to move freely without trouble from the soldiers of Angmar. As it turned out, he traded with both sides.

I hope my last post did not turn out too rushed. I usually write most of it in one sitting, so if it seems choppy or disjointed that's why.

I look forward to everyone's posts!

Naurmaethor, I forget to ask for permission to use Camedhil. I can change my post if you do not want me to use him.

So, as the battle is starting I'm wondering what the ratio of Angmar's forces to Fornost is? Obviously there are more than 10 Dunedain rangers defending the city. Just wanting to pick everyones brains on how many soldiers do we think there are defending the city versus the forces of Angmar? The battle of Helms Deep(in the book) was about 3,000 vs 17,000. I'd imagine the Rangers are more of the elite, special forces type soldiers and then in addition them we have the standard soldiers of Fornost that are either specialised as archers or infantry. Where as the Rangers would have training in both. So, if I had to think how I visualize it I would say I imagine possibly 500 rangers + 1,000 archers + 1,000 infantry that could be made up of spearmen and swordsmen. Then possibly 25-50 that are in the King's Royal Guard? What are everyone else's thoughts? I'd just like to get a good mental picture of our force. The enemy I would imagine to be some where around 10,000-15,000 orcs + 2500-5000 evil men. Obviously there are catapults on both sides. Once the enemy gets too close the catapults will be useless though.

Quite true with the catapults. Best get them in action as the armies approach.

As for numbers, Your numbers sound reasonably good to me for this RP. I'd give King Arvedui 100 Royal Guardsmen who would be mounted on open-ground warfare. I touched on the King's sons commanding divisions of soldiers and reserves. I'm sure this has been debated much in Tolkien lore, and I believe the Professor left these details up to his readers. My thoughts on that is there were enough to protect the kingdom, but with the attrition that Arthedain suffered through the years and centuries, it had reached a point where there was not enough to prevent the disaster that unfolded in Third Age 1974. Hence the plea for aid from the much stronger and populous Gondor. I tend to not overthink the greater detail here and concentrate on the local units my characters are in.

I suppose the numbers could vary, with the more the Dunedain numbers, the higher the death rate through the year since there were too few population for Aranarth to re-establish the Kingdom of Arthedain after the Witch King was routed.

The numbers that both of you mentioned sound good to me.

Sorry if my last post doesn't sound very polished, I was just ready to get it out there. It seems most of my posts end up being to catch my characters up with events. I suppose that happens when you have more than five characters running around in different directions.

Your post not sound polished? I thought your post was great! I don't know if I could keep up with so many characters as well as you do and it is nice for the reader to get to read the experiences of several different characters in one post. My post on the other hand was done after a very long day of work and past my bedtime and I'm sorry that it showed.

.... and I'll knock both your heads together and say that it is an honour to be writing with such fine writers as you both, and let me drag Cenor into this group hug..... you too ItarildeSirfalas!

Lady Song, thanks for your well-written part with Dauwna! It's better than anything I would have come up with!

I'm not able to access internet too much today, and maybe tomorrow too, so just dropping in here for a tick to read. Naurmaethor, I get the post writing in short hours before bed, or taking a few at work to get some thoughts down. I try and smooth them out before posting, but it doesn't always happen.

I'll work on a post for Marcadil as I have time, and try and put it together for presentation this weekend. I have to say there is some great concurrent writing going on here! My collaborative tale project on Henneth Annun aside, this is one of the more enjoyable RPs I've been involved in since I was in Shadow of Arnor in 2000-2002 (on another website).

Happy Writing everyone!

Well I have to say that this is my favorite RP ever. If we get to finish it I think all the players could turn it into a fanfic so it stays here forever!

I love everyone's characters and I will die if any of them don't make it out. I'm still trying to decide who is going to make it out of Fornost...which isn't fun and its giving me Character Depression lol

Ah yes.... a bane of mine in past RPs has been that I create some NCE for a certain plot device at some point, and then I get attached to them and build them and I have another loved character. I saw that happening with Malassuil in this RP as I was only going to use him in a couple posts, but then started building on him more than I intended. So I was going to off him, but couldn't, so only wrote it up that he went missing on the North Downs. Chances are he's dead, but I had to leave myself that door cracked and un-latched... if you get my drift with all this.

As for my other two characters, I haven't decided yet ....

I added a post that is from the perspective of King Arvedui. It had to be hard for him in this hour.
