Post Quenya subtitles
on: November 04, 2016 01:55
Hey there.

I´m helping some guys make a quenya subtitle option for a web-series and I´d appreciate it if someone has some thoughts on the following sentence:

"We can´t just let him die"

My first impulse has been to rewrite it a bit, in order to make it more compliant with quenya:
"Orir ment umë lerta sen qualë" -> "Compels for us(you and I) to not allow for him(/her/it) to die"

During this project I´ve found out that many things, which work in everyday-english, are tough to translate in a satisfactory manner and a simple phrasing involving the word "just" seems to me to work better with the "or-"(impel) formulae instead.

After a bit of thought I have another possible translation:
"Uangwë lertuva sen qualë!" -> "We (you and I) shall not allow for him to die"
This one I have put in the future tense because the construction more seems to indicate a specific event to come, whereas the previous sentence is a more general statement.

Still all input will be welcome.
