First-time RPer looking for tips

Hello!

I may be participating in an RPG sometime soon. I have never done role-playing before in my entire life, and frankly, although I am incredibly excited, I have no idea what I'm doing! Are there any experienced RPers out there who can help me out?

Oh, and as for the poll, I know that it doesn't belong here, and I have no idea why it is there. Must be something wrong with my computer. Don't ask. But while it's there, I guess you could select your favorite hobbit meal of the day!
