  • My very first encounter of Tolkien's work was in the fifth grade, and we (in the advanced reading class) had to read the Hobbit. Before that, I had only known lotr as 'that thing my mom is obsessed with' Reading it was absolute torture, but I couldn't help but love the story. When we finally finished, I looked at the last pages of the book and found...A TRILOGY?! I told myself that I'd give it a shot when I was older, and could properly enjoy the books. I didn't give much thought to it after that, thinking it wouldp be quite distant in the future until I would do so. But it turned out to only be a few years. The summer I was going into seventh grade, my mom got tickets to see one of the lotr movies at Ravinia! I was really excited, but not for lotr. You see, I'm into classical music, so when I found out I'd be seeing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra live and in person- OMG!!!! We went to go see TTT (yes, unfortunately I saw them- no- LIVED them- out of order 🙁 ) I had absolutely no idea what was going on. And yet, it was one of the most amazing things I'd ever seen (with a special thanks to Legolas's fabulous hair and creative ways of killing stuff). After that, I HAD to read all three books, and see all three movies (more than once). It was a wonderful journey through the world of lotr, and for old time's sake, I read the Hobbit again. And properly enjoyed it.
