I adored this scene because it was such a beautiful bridge between the two movies: the original scene from the first movie (hardly edited) flows into the fight with the Balrog. The result is that majestic scene where Balrog and Gandalf fall into that beautiful underground lake.

What bothered me, however, was that Gandalf the White was announced too soon. I know that he was in the trailers already, but for me – as a reader – his return was a very emotional and mythical moment in the second book. By entering the story with Gandalf, it becomes too clear that he will remain alive and return to the story.
