I think a very important change is, that in the movie, Legolas thinks it is Saruman, while in the book it is Gimli who is suspicious. While Legolas should have a feeling about an “evil” thing (after all, even in the movie he knows that the forest is old and full of memory), he could not recognise Gandalf’s wise and friendly appearance. Too bad though, because sticking to the book at this point would have pointed out Gimli’s aversion to the wood more. And that would have left space for Legolas’s aversion for caves (like the glittering caves). Besides, it gives not a good view on the wisdom of the Elves.
