35th Anniversary of Tolkien’s Death
On this day, September 2nd, 1973, Professor J. R. R. Tolkien passed away, only 21 months after his beloved Edith had died. He was buried in Wolvercote Cemetery, Oxford, next to his wife. The tombstone reads,
“Edith Mary Tolkien
Lúthien
1889 – 1971
John Ronald
Reuel Tolkien
Beren
1892 – 1973″
We all thank and honor the Professor for his wonderful work that has inspired generations. He is greatly missed.

RIP, man. Thanks. 🙂
ah yes..without Tolkien there wouldnt be any Lord of the Rings. how sad would that be? thanks, Tolkien!!!!
Thanks to Professor Tolkien who made Lord of the Rings possible…it’s so sad he died though 🙁
It is so beautiful that their tombstone calls them “Beren and Lúthien.” They loved each other so much, and their story is a little bit like Beren and Lúthien’s (check out the biography or something). John Ronald and Edith are having their “happily ever after” in heaven.
Thank you so much, Professor Tolkien! Your story really changed my life!
He still among us and will never be gone from our imaginations. The man is immortal. Thank you CoE for remembering the man and knowing that he is still with his Luthien. He is in His Middle-earth with Her. He still delivers The Magic and Wondr of Middle-earth to the World through his books.
Rest in peace, Proffesor Tolkien. Hannon le for the magical world you have made!
Absolutely right, he is immortal through his writing and all of us who love his world so much. Thank you, J.R.R. Tolkien, for changing everything.
Tolkien was the wisest man I’ve ever known of, and I’m so sad that he’s gone. Rest in peace, creator of Middle Earth. We’ll all miss him, even though he’ll never be really gone or forgotten. John Ronald Ruel Tolkien was the best ever!
