According to Unfinished Tales, Artano was the name Sauron gave himself, along with a fair appearance, to deceive the Noldor in the Second Age while he was forging the One Ring.

Artano meant 'High-Smith', and he took this name for he wanted the elves to believe that he was trained by Aulë the Smith in Valinor.
