Post 50th Anniversary US Edition LOTR - Houghton Mifflin

I put this here since it's a book-collectible question and not a book-content question.

THe tipped in maps in this keepsake edition are wonderful, but I wondered if anyone else has the funny gel spots on the page holding the map? Are these supposed to keep the maps from flopping open while you read the book, or are they intended to glue the map into the book?
