Post Amazing Grace (Quenya)
on: January 31, 2015 05:12
I took a stab at doing Amazing Grace in Quenya. I was wondering if someone wouldn't mind looking it over and see if there are any glaring mistakes. Particularly the last two lines of the last stanza. I've included the English as well for quick reference.

Elmendëa Erulissë

Elmendëa Erulissë, yé lissë i lamma,
Ya rehtanë yelwa ve ni.
Nëa anen vanwa mal sí nányë hirna,
Anen cénelóra, mal sí cenenyë ceninyë.

Anes Erulissë, ya pëantanë endanyan rucië.
Ar Erulissë, caurenyar tiutanë.
Yé maira, Erulissë tana sénë,
Minyavë sávenyë lúmenna.

Ter rimbë raxi, mótali ar remmar,
Nollo utúlienyë;
Anes Erulissë, ya utúliën varnavë sísenna,
Ar Erulissë ni-tulyuva márenna.

I Héru antië ánië nin máno vanda.
Quettarya estelinya varya.
Nauvaryë turma ar mittanya,
Tenna i metta coiviéo.

Násië, írë hrávë ar hón sina queluvar
Ar fírima coivië tyeluva,
Haryuvanyë meneldë,
Alassë ar rainëo coivië.

Írë euvalvë tassë ter loar húmi quëan
Calimavë calië ve Anar,
Lau samilvë mancë aureli lirien laitali Eruo,
Lá yassë minyavë yestanelvë.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun.

I'm quite rusty and you appear more practiced in Quenya than I am; nonetheless I wonder whether you meant ceninyë for aorist in the 4th line? Also, is antië a perfect tense form of "give"? In his Quenya wordlist, Ardalambion's Helge Fauskanger notes that the attested form is ánië.

Thanks! I think you are correct on both counts.
