Post Help on plurals?
on: April 25, 2016 04:25
Hi all. I'm a very very new learner of Quenya, and I've just made it to lesson 2, plurals. (woo!) So far I'm doing well, but I do have a quick question:

Does the emphasis in pronunciation change once you add a plural ending? (or any other ending, for that matter?) For example, with the word aranel, The stress should be on the first syllable, Aranel, right? When adding the 'i' ending, does the emphasis switch to arAneli?

Thanks for being patient with beginners like me!

Yes, it's one of the defining properties of Quenya word stress that the stress moves in e.g. the plural (and in lots of other derivations).

But your example is not entirely appropriate as the correct plural of aranel is aranelli (more about this in lesson 3). So the stress moves two syllables (to the e): aranElli.
