Serves: The Maggot family and guests (4-6)
Prep Time: 1 hr.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Ingredients
Filling:1 large onion
2 carrots
Bacon fat
1 lb. cubed beef
1 tbsp. flour
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup beef stock
Crust:
1 lb. potatoes, peeled and quartered
2-3 tbsp. butter or margarine
Milk
Salt and pepper
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.Slice onion and carrot; saute in fat until onions are limp. Add beef, flour, salt and pepper. Saute for several minutes. Add beef stock and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
While the filling simmers, make the potato crust.
Cover potatoes with water and boil until soft. Drain and mash with butter or margarine and enough milk to moisten. Season with salt and pepper.
Put filling in greased pie dish and cover with mashed potatoes. Bake in 375-degree oven for 30 minutes.
Before serving, run the dish quickly under the broiler to brown the potato crust.

This recipie is great if you want the basics, to be able to add whatever flavor you want into it. I added 1/2 an onion, taco seasoning and 1/2 red and 1/2 orange peppers to the hamburger. To save time instant mashed potatoes is great! I’m a big fan of cheese so I added about a cup of cheese in between the filling and the crust. After I sprinkled cheese on top of the potatoes.
